The first four didn't seem to have DI's or very early/poor ones and so were re-done. |

To Sony's credit they do a neg cut for every movie of theirs that's shot on film but finished on a DI, so they've got a conformed version - albeit as the theatrical cut, for better or worse - which they can return to for a new 4K transfer. (I don't exactly know how they handle VFX shots within that framework because a film-out cut into the neg will lose a touch of quality vs the final 2K file upscaled into 4K, if I had to do it myself I'd choose the latter option.)

I am betting because they are the two oldest films that they needed 4K scans. The newer films had more recent 2K DIs while the older two above probably had scans that looked rather rough at 4K so they re-scanned them.

The DTS: X tracks are worth it alone, though I wish they had used Dolby Atmos. |

So... I been reading and almost studying this thread. Currently on page 30 and before I continue, is it safe to say... That having a true 4k Blu-ray library is just not a possibility at this point? Considering special effects and type of camera used, most will be at 2.8k. But these 4k blurays still have a major jump over the 1080p blurays because of things like HDR or Dolby Vision. Better yet, these movies with a 2.8k DI would normally be downgraded to 1080p bluray, which meant loss of colors and detail, whereas upconverting to 4k would have almost zero loss of information. Am I correct so far?
My question is... You have 4k discs that are upconverting a 2.8k DI. What problem can this create? The process of upconverting create visible artifacts? Thanks. |
