![]() Seems the neg could be rescanned at 4 or 6K for a new 4K DI. Or would that be too much trouble for a fantastic stop-motion animation movie? ![]() |

It's Universal and I think Dreamworks, so it would be trouble for their bean counters.

Considering all the dumb arguing in here I would hope it wouldn't be out of place to simply ask a question.
I just became 4K capable and bought some UHD BRs, but noticed extreme differences in quality. For example, Pacific Rim looked beautiful and filled my whole screen, while Kick-Ass had bars on top and bottom and looked upscaled. Pacific Rim isn't on the list of this thread though, so maybe it's just from a better master than the other movie but it still wasn't 4K? I'm mainly asking because reviews of the Kick-Ass UHD called it well done, but it was underwhelming and I'd like to know what stats to look for to avoid wasting my money. (If this is considered off topic let me know and I'll move it.) |

Congratulations (and try not to mind the forum drama)! The bars on top and bottom are a product of the screen format of the individual movie and are completely independent of whether or not the transfer is an upscale. In this case, both discs (Kick-Ass and Pacific Rim) are upscales.

There are excellent, good and poor 4K discs. You need to read a few reviews before purchasing, as there are several poor releases. But when you get an excellent release, it really makes 4K UHD HDR worth every cent.
Regarding black bars on the top and bottom of your screen. If you have a Blu-ray collection you would have experienced the same thing. Look on the back of the case and find aspect ratio. If it says 1.78:1 or 1.85:1, you will get full screen. 1.85:1 still has very small (about 1") black bars. Anything with 2.39:1, 2.40:1 or something similar, will have wider black bars. Hope this helps. |

This is exactly the thing I’m looking for, I didn’t realize ratios would vary so widely under the same format. Thanks to both users who responded.
