Talking New 'Tales From The Crypt' Series In Works

I absolutely loved the original series as a kid, this could be pretty great it they can get John Kassir to return as the voice of the Crypt Keeper.

Quote:
Fifteen years after horror anthology Tales from the Crypt ended its seven-year-run on HBO, a new TV series based on the popular and controversial 1950s EC Comics anthology is in the works with Gil Adler, producer on the HBO Crypt series, and Andrew Cosby, co-creator of Syfy hit Eureka and co-founder of comic book publisher BOOM! Studios. The new hourlong series will neither be anthological nor related to the HBO show. "It will be an ongoing series that uses characters from the comic books in a more modern context," Cosby said. "It's all about continually elevating the genre, for both existing fans of the source material and mainstream audiences." Cosby and Adler first started discussing reviving the franchise on TV and then approached Joel Eisenberg, whose company with Timothy Owens EMO Films had acquired the rights to the comic books. After a lengthy legal process to make sure that all rights have been properly secured, the TV series project is now moving forward and is being developed by EC Film, Radio & Television, a partnership between William M. Gaines Agent, Inc. -- the corporation representing the intellectual property of the late Crypt creator Gaines run by his daughter Cathy Gaines Mifsud -- and EMO Films. Producing are Adler, Cosby and Steven Sawalich of Articulus Entertainment. Eisenberg will executive produce, while William Gaines' grandson Corey Mifsud will be credited as associate producer.

A detailed pitch and a bible for the new Crypt series have been completed, with producers expected to take the project out shortly. It will be pitched to broadcast networks as part of the current development cycle as well as to cable outlets. (There had been some rumblings about potential interest from HBO sister channel Cinemax, which has returned to original programming.) The producers are considering both a traditional network model and non-traditional route for the project, including fully financing the series, probably as an international co-production, before taking it to U.S. nets.

I really hope it doesn't go to one of those "premium cable" channels, they truly don't hold a candle to what AMC and F/X have to offer anymore. Plus they'd lose many viewers unwilling to pay stupid fees.

Now if the studios would get around to a Blu-Ray release of the "true" first Tales From The Crypt movie, Death Becomes Her I could die happy.

HBO has a very solid lineup I don't think they are too worried. There are millions of subscribers currently and they also sell the hell out of their shows overseas. If it goes to premium it isn't about viewers it's about marketability and revenue from sales.

Yeah HBO would be a perfect fit for this show same with AMC. FX I think they have a higher chance of canceling it as it seems they don't keep shows around long ever. Really hoping this goes on HBO or AMC and not FX or network.

Default Great show.

It could be good. I loved the original as well. My mom rented it for me not knowing what it was.

I don't know how to feel here.

The original series succeeded because it directly adapted the old EC comic stories, with only minor changes here and there to modernize some of them. They used the old comics like storyboards for most episodes.

IF they did that again, and adapted stories that weren't adapted before... and perhaps a few updates mixed in... then I would like it.

But if they are going to do a "Freddy's Nightmares" thing and just use the names and title and do new stories with little ties to the comic... then I think I would lose interest in a hurry.

Sounds really cool but I would rather they go back to the anthology part of the series but having an ongoing story with Tales characters sounds cool if they can pull it off. Good to see horror shows making a comeback with this new Crypt series and Eerie and Creepy being in the works also.

Loved the original Tales from the Crypt so if this can renew interest in the franchise I'm all for it. Would love to get Demon Knight on Blu-ray with the series. Seeing John Kassir as the Crypt keeper again would be awesome.

Just hope they get this on cable and wish they weren't talking to networks as this will never last if they want to follow the comics or just last in general for being a horror show.

After the failure of NBC's Fear Itself and demise of Masters of Horror, I'm kinda skittish.

The original TFTC was great, can that be duplicated with this new version?

This series isn't going the anthology route but an ongoing series with characters taken from the comic so if it's on cable and has good writers I see this series doing good and being able to survive. If it's on network I see it not making it past season 1 regardless of writers.
