I'm guessing the ball is in Cameron's court. He was planning on re-releasing this theatrically as a 3D conversion.

He said maybe Anyways, Lowry/Reliance is doing the 4K scan. Maybe Cameron is waiting until he gets the rights back, which will happen in 2019! Or maybe it'll come out in 2015, when the new movie hits theaters.

No real technical details about the new TR transfer were made public, to my knowledge.

Well for sure it's not a telecine. As can clearly be seen from the screenshots. So that leaves either a 2K, or a 4K scan. Verhoeven was involved, it even has his signature on the cover. It's a modern scan, done in 2012. It was done from original film elements, so there's another strike against a telecine.

It's more than likely 4K.

I remember reading a press release that it was a 2k scan from the OCN supervised by PV.

Could very well be. At any rate, it looks absolutely fantastic. One of the best reference discs of 2012.

Even though I don't like the StudioCanal sound mix, I think I'll have to rebuy the original Optimum/SC UK version because its encode (along with the French theatrical version) is the best of a mediocre bunch. The Skynet is just too filtered and even the JP premium edition appears to be a tiny bit softer than the StudioCanal encode(s).
Which transfer is the StudioCanal encode based on? The French HD DVD of the extended edition has obvious EE. The German HD DVD looks almost identical to the Japanese BD to me, with the BD's compression being the only real improvement.

I saw somewhere that Total Recall was a new 2K scan.

I don't have the new Total Recall, but it sure looks like a 4K scan to me on all the screencaps I've seen from it. Plus it's been getting flawless reviews for picture quality. But even if it isn't 4K it looks good enough that it might as well be 4K.

I know modern day 2K scans can look outstanding, but the Total Recall remaster has to be from 4K, the detail and sharpness is through the roof.

As for T2, the Jap Premium Edition looks much better then the Skynet Edition as expected, but is fetching crazy prices. The old Blu-Ray and HD-DVD look about the same as the Jap Premium Edition (give or take), are easier to track down and are cheaper.

They're all the same underlying transfer, it just depends on what they did to that master at the local level. You say that the French one has obvious EE, and it does, but they all do because it's baked in to the master. There's slightly less filtering on the StudioCanal extended version compared to the JPN and the Skynet versions, and even the FR theatrical has had an extra dirt removal pass, which is why the EE's coming through that lil' bit more on the SC extended.

In some screenshots, the French HD-DVD looks better than the Japanese release:

In others, the compression artifacts show due to the inferior VC-1 codec and the Japanese looks better:

The Japanese (along with several other releases) has been horizontally stretched, my guess is in order to remove the line at the top:

It's really too bad that they did this because it removes some of the sharpness which means that ultimately no current release of the movie gets the most out of the existing T2 master, as outdated as it is.

Im going to have to watch my Total Recall (new one) again because when I had a quick look at it, I didnt think it was that special PQ wise at all In fact, I seem to remember it being not much difference from my old one...

That's what I was thinking when looking at the caps, it's the 'stretching' that seems to shaved off a tiny bit of detail on the relevant versions.

Would love to see a remaster. DVD vs Blu-ray is not a big step forward. Terminator 1 looks far more better, than 2 which is a more recent movie.

There is potential for sure.

Well, yeah. That's what you get when comparing a 10-year-old 1080/24psf transfer to a new high-res scan that's had a Lowry cleanup.

If you were talking about the release that came out in Europe,(but not the UK), etc, before the remastered release, (but after the UK Studio Canal disc), then you would have a point.

The newer one of those is the same transfer, with a better encoding. It removes the video noise, which people were mistaking for grain. Video noise, which also masked sharpening artifacts.

The remaster looks nothing like these two releases, thankfully.

Actually we concluded the UK was the best over at the OT restoration thread but it is a shame its the special edition
