Another completely unrelated question: are there any differences between Bandai's release of the Eureka Seven movie and Funi's? I have the original Bandai release and I'm curious if it's worth a re-purchase. If anything I suspect Bandai's release to be better!

Don't have the new release but I do have the Bandai bluray and I suspect it's as good or better than the new one.

I got a copy of Den-noh Coil Volume 1 much earlier than the listed street date. Unfortunately, the video quality is atrocious. There's a constant digital noise over everything like it was a poorly upscaled DVD, except the lines themselves are clean and crisp enough that it has to be bad encoding or something. It's constantly there, but is especially noticeable when characters are on-screen and not moving around, or when the camera pans over light-colored backgrounds.

I made an account just to post about it, unfortunately it seems I can't link to any screenshots or video clips until my New Member status wears off.

Wonder if that's intentional then (I've never seen the show). For example, Kino's Journey's scanlines are supposed to be there, early fansubs tried to filter it out. Red Garden meanwhile is apparently supposed to have that sea of grain or whatever it was I heard about a while back.

Sounds intentional. It's important to remember that it isn't a brand new show.

My memory of Dennou Coil (based off a fansubbed R2J ISO) was that there was some kind of grain overlay on the picture.

It sounds like it might be the same problems that on When They Cry Kai, which is without question, the worst anime BD I own and I thought Sailor Moon could never be topped (but that nostalgia tho). But I loved the show and it was obtained cheap. However, if this is another case of that, I'll cancel my order and wait for a considerably cheaper option down the line.

There's a clear difference between intentional scanlines on the cyber objects in the show and the noise that shows up on everything.

I could understand if they wanted to simulate film grain but it's not simulating film grain. It's just ugly and distracting.

It's such a good show, I hope that they can go back and do a re-release with better image quality. But since it's an ADV shell company, probably not.

Got news for you-I have the Australian dvd set and it's the same way-it's intentional on the part of the show's creators for art's sake.

That Dennou video didn't really show me anything bad, except the horrible compression used on YouTube

Made me really want to get that first volume though

Well, I can see all the dot-crawl in the video that would be a bit distracting - it's like the whole screen is alive with tiny crawly-bugs - like the grain itself is alive. In the stills, it makes all the characters look like they have a bad complexion problem.

I didn't want to necro-bump the Jin-Roh thread so I figured I'd ask here: are there any advantages to the JP BD from Bandai over the Discotek release? From what I understand, the Discotek version removed the windowboxing but was apparently cropped and zoomed(?). Is there a loss of resolution in the Discotek version due to the zooming?

I mean it's really just a tiny bit of the edges removed, I'm pretty sure everything is just a little bit zoomed in rather than different resolution but I can't confirm until I get home. Either way it otherwise looks the same as the JP BD last time I saw comparisons- it's pretty much worth the significant price difference in my opinion.
Only thing you're really missing is some blank space really (I don't remember how much of the actual image is cut if any but I remember it being incredibly insignificant)

Keep in mind the windowboxing was meant for overscanning which unfortunately was still a thing.

What you think is Youtube compression is present on the BD itself.
