Anyone have the Rose of Versailles DVDs from RS that can comment on the PQ, and just quality of the sets overall? I missed the LE's when they were on sale last holiday, but I've been thinking of just going ahead and snagging them before I can't anymore.

Still haven't watched my set though there is a review of the LE DVD sets awhile ago that mentioned...

Quote:
The DVD:

Video:

The Rose of Versailles is presented on DVD by RightStuf/Nozomi with surprisingly good transfers that suggests some restoration work was likely done, because colors and artwork throughout the show suggest a surprisingly clean and efficient presentation. There are still occasional moments where specks of dirt or remarkably minor print damage is visible; it's mainly consistently impressive though, and the show looks remarkably detailed and crisp considering the standard definition presentation. The impressive animation is beautiful to appreciate with these notable and enjoyable episode transfers, which are retained with the original aspect ratio of 1.33:1 full-frame.

Audio:

The 1.0 mono audio included on these episodes isn't anything particularly special to behold. However, it's the original audio that the series was created with, and for its age it sounds as remarkably clean, crisp, and audible as one can expect: dialogue is easy to understand and properly follow (which is the most important aspect) and while overall fidelity is generally average at best, the vocal clarity is good enough for viewing the show.

Extras:

The only supplements included on the first Rose of Versailles collection are clean opening and closing animations.

I posted a link to Sensuifu's screencaps for A Town Where You Live a few posts ago just so you know.

It doesn't look too bad. The eps are just over 22 mins each, including extra English credits, even. Only the one language track too, of course.

I like the show. I wish it'd been 26 proper-length episodes instead of these measly 12. The material is obviously there. The cheap animation is most obvious in the mouth movements; I've never noticed any this bad.

Because I didn't think to do math, now I realize it's like Sentai doing one BD-50. Still, this is a practice I'm not too fond of even though you can get good-looking discs if someone competent enough if doing it.

Yep, anime will never be animated in 4K... it's only a matter of time.

Well of course. The animators' arms aren't long enough to work on paper that big.

Paper? While that's still being used (the computers are doing the coloring), many actually are now using tablets and such.

Speaking of Revolutionary Girl Utena, still no info on that one and it's almost December. Looks like it's getting pushed into next year, but I hope that means we end up with a nice presentation. 1:1 video and audio PLEASE NOZOMI

Has anyone checked out the PQ of the Tekkaman Blade II Blu-ray yet? A friend of mine got it and was complaining about the inconsistent PQ.

He said he watched the first three episodes and that the first 10 minutes or so of each episode looked good, almost like a good re-master, but then the rest of each episode looked like a crappy quality upscale until it got to the "on the next episode" sequence which then looked good again. I'm curious if any of you have seen it yet and how it looks to you.

The new Code Geass release has some of the highest bitrates I have seen in a Funimation release.

Each season is on 4 BD50s (7-7-7-4 split) with video bitrates around 26-27 Mbps.

Sensuifu posted screencaps on Code Geass, and also reported a serious audio problem. If true, holy shit FUNi...

Only other time I know of they ****ed up the audio on an English dub that much was Spice & Wolf II. Though that was even worse because the JP audio also had a problem.

I did an audio check (S2) and the results were interesting. Looking at the phase analysis and listening to it in realtime, the dialogue part of the dub audio is indeed in mono. However, other parts (op/ed, bgm, backing/fx tracks) seem to be in stereo (possibly dual-mono).

The problem is the mix. While some parts are in stereo, the dialogue ruins the stereo separation by attenuating the rest of the soundtrack because it runs a bit hot. In other words, the dialogue's volume level is louder than the rest of the audio track, so that means all the nuances and miscellaneous sounds beside the spoken dialogue is drowned out (not surprising since they're likely only using 2.0 sources). Because they've encoded this as a 5.1 track, everything is now focused onto the Center Channel. This means any channel separation will be slightly, if not barely audible once downmixed to the center. I'd chalk this up as a mono release.

As far as the JP audio track goes- as suspected, it runs an average of 7-10dB below the dub track. The thin sound is partially due to a lack of bass management/equalization and the volume level being below normal. Though the phase analysis shows stereo separation compared to the dub and has better dynamics even with the lower volume.

Also related, I heard with The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, they messed with the already good 5.1 mix, and their Blu-ray audio-wise is quite a downgrade from the Bandai Entertainment release.

Such garbage, Funi. And it will only get worse with the mass of titles they are licensing currently - they'll push them through manufacturing so fast they won't bother or care to do any QA on anything before releasing them. Definitely holding on to my Bandai TGWLTT release, then.

Thankfully I haven't broken the seal on my Code Geass Loser Edition yet - still very much considering to return it for my money back.
