So uh, looks like the Strike the Blood release Discotek is distributing for Crunchyroll used 2 BDs for all 24 episodes... Kinda worried here even though you can make those look good. Timestamp: 3:12
![]() [Edit]Oh and looking at things more closely (I initially watched this on election night), Arpeggio is also one disc. Also hearing they're doing the same thing on School Days and Seha Girls. Discotek is becoming the new Sentai with this practice. And come to think of it, it's been a while since Sentai tried to put that many episodes on a disc. |

Yeah, I just noticed that, and I actually have a very good idea of how that happened.

Got my Outlaw Star from AL. Great-looking set, and with the matte finish I actually like it a lot better than Escaflowne (in addition to being cheaper and more compact.)
The film scan for this is really fantastic, with clean, fine grain, bold colors/contrast and the sharpness is just insane. Way ahead of Escaflowne and Cowboy Bebop which are quite a bit softer, more muddled and more washed out, especially the latter. Compression looks good, but it's not amazing. Many shots are flawless, in others there's a fair amount of smoothening or artifacts in the grain (see the last shot for example), and spot-checking I noticed a few shots with fast movement and flashing lights where the compression was on the verge of breaking up, but for the most part probably nothing to worry about. http://imgur.com/a/CSRU8 |

It's mostly down to the quality of the scan and the film element. Pretty sure Escaflowne was 35mm as well, but Outlaw Star was scanned from the original negative, while Esca (and probably Bebop given that the transfers share a lot of the same characteristics) were scanned from film at least a generation removed.

I mean, how does that even happen?? They should have near lossless SD masters (If not, why would someone be dumb enough to only store and keep super lossy MPEG-2 masters for something animated digitally??). How do they **** this up? At this point, why don't you just release it on SD BD 480p with much better compression quality and just let the player do the upscaling? It won't look worse than Viz's upscaling. And you'll fit more episodes per disc. It's a win win. |

Hard to imagine it could be worse than that.. ok I can. Those Japanese Q-TEC releases are like they took Composite video tape masters. And then did an average blur on everything to get rid of all the noise and chroma crosstalk issues.
People complain about Funimation. (Which I get) but at least they aren't as bad as Viz. Sometimes, I wonder if the licensors stipulate that they make the video quality ever so slightly worse on purpose. Because they know it will be a cheaper, importable option. But they count on the fact that the small, high priced market base they have at home are rabid enough to care about the difference in quality. (Why else would they put up with extortionate pricing?) The fact that us plebs outside of Japan care, shows that enough I think. Speaking of quality. I can only pray to god, if and when we get a US release of Outlaw, that they don't **** it up. That transfer is insane. |

We are going to get a release of Outlaw Star, it's just for some unknown reason, Sunrise still hasn't sent the materials to FUNimation and they've been waiting for them since late 2013... This is one of the longest materials delays in R1 history. Sentai Filmworks has it even worse, they've received materials for nothing, at least FUNi got Escaflowne, Code Geass, and Cowboy Bebop out the door.
As for licensors giving companies inferior masters, I doubt that's the case today, but it was a thing back in the DVD singles era. Kadokawa intentionally sent companies composite masters for Scrapped Princess, Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu, Maburaho, The Melody of Oblivion, Girls Bravo (which for some odd reason still looks like crap through FUNi and I don't know who to blame, FUNi or Kadokawa), and some more I may be forgetting or don't know about. Scrapped Princess in particular looks atrocious. Once Kadokawa Pictures USA happened (they're long gone now), we got clean video on Kadokawa stuff. As for the high-pricing, they deal with it because they have an inelastic demand and are buying right away + Japanese releases are much nicer in terms of packaging, not just video quality (in most cases). They're not going to wait for a barebones release that comes out 6 months to a year or two after the Japanese release finishes that has locked subtitles and/or geo-locking. Also many are aware that if they don't buy, the industry could collapse or have issues. Video publishers tend to be at the top or towards the top of the production committees they're on, and are investing quite a bit, though the discs aren't the only thing that matter of course. |
