Based off of those examples, that is much better than the Japanese BD.

They've added a truckload of false sharpness. The ringing is nuts.

The Japanese looks better. Again the US notching up the brightness! Why do they always do that!?

You guys should post your feedback on the Kickstarter page if you have any comments. It is still early enough in the campaign where they can change things.

The US screenshots have lots more detail in the backgrounds, though. Even with the EE, I'd take it over the Japanese release. However, it would be wonderful if they dialed it down.

EDIT: Nozomi responded and said they're taking a look at the EE and ringing issue, and I saw pika brought up the brightness.

No thanks, I'll just let the OPPO do the upscale on the original DVDs. Even better if I just watch the DVDs on my CRT.

Sensuifu from Fandom Post posted his thoughts:

Quote:
I noticed the slight ringing/halos but the recovered details are definitely cleaner. Some sharpening/EE can be applied without noticeable artifacting, which I suggested earlier. Not sure what's with the negative comments thinking these preliminary shots are worse than the import. Despite the halo'ing (which can be further minimized or undone) it still looks superior to the ugliness that's the Japanese release. The characters have improved detail as well. The smudging is nearly nonexistent compared to the import, which looks like crap in general. I think Nozomi should sample some text, i.e. the title cards, etc. to really show the difference.

Not surprised Nozomi can one-up the JP releases (Sentai is another with their Patlabor releases) by not only releasing the entire franchise for the cost of one of the JP boxsets, they're including a lot of physical extras that the imports never got (aside from retailer-exclusives, which don't really count).. I'm laughing at and kicking myself for buying all the imports, seeing that the domestic release already trumps the originals (as far as the SD releases are concerned, not sure how Avvenire will look).

Man you guys should have seen what this fansub group did with their own upscale for Aria season 1, it looked like it was completely re-composite. Too bad the screenshots don't exist anymore and impossible to download the videos now.

Maybe they used Warp Sharpening to do that?

I know that I originally thought the Lucky Star Blu Ray in Japan was HD Native and not an upscale because someone had used Warp Sharpening on the video and the difference can be massive but it's a controversial technique even if it can be at a quick glance incredibly effective.

They probably did. On the close up shots, it look true HD all the way without any bad side effects. On the wider shots, it looked okay.

Here's some abbreviated BDInfo scans of the original Mach Go Go Go from the grossly-overpriced Funimation box set. The executive summary is that it's 1080p AVC video @ 18.5 mbps with 16-bit Dolby TrueHD stereo. Nothing special, but sufficient for an old 4:3 OAR show with minimal sound effects.

Good to know Mach Go Go Go is a solid release. Now if Funimation could do us all a solid on the price that would also be most welcome.

No kidding. Not a single soul I know wants that giant sculpted monstrosity anywhere near their home video collection, they need to make separate, more affordable series releases for Mach Go Go Go and the reboot.

So again, Dynit edition is the best in the world in terms of pictures quality.
Damn, GG Mp3dom.

It's difficult to see from theses screenshots, but I don't see the green teint on the IT version.
