So Funimation's BDs for Orange have a lot of banding as usual for them. In most of the episodes, the banding is typically moderate but in episode 12, I think due to it having a lower contrast than the other episodes, it is really bad with heavy banding in like nearly every scene. I wish I was able to take screenshots to show just how bad it is.

Mawaru Penguindrum - Siren Visual BD

Screenshots

Used madvr for the screenshots because of its deinterlacing abilities. Tried the IVTC filter in Virtualdub2, but the filter is quite frankly terrible:

If you thought of buying the Siren Visual BD, good luck. It's OOP and hard to find now.

That bitrate... why they didn’t encode the other episodes on the disc at 30 mbps is beyond me...

Also, it’s odd that the dub is lossy Dolby Digital. Not that it matters, but it’s a weird choice.

I'd also be interested in how the Kino's Journey SDBD turned out. I have the ADV DVD set, but I'd upgrade if it was worth it.

JPN BD

US BD

I haven't watched this movie yet personally, but from flicking through quickly they both appear to be pretty much identical (Ignore the ever so slight foreground difference in picture 2 as MPC captured the wrong frame). There was one exception where the US BD held up a bit better though (picture 4), and the US BD also has a few more pixels on the top of the image for what it's worth. Audio wise it's dual DTS HD-MA 5.1 tracks with three subtitle tracks - Hard of Hearing, Full subtitles and Signs only. The intro and ending credits are also in English, although neither of the ED songs have been subtitled. Strange considering one of them is Engrish and actually has English subtitles on the Japanese BD's JP track.

JP BD 1 2 3 4
US BD 1 2 3 4

Lastly, I don't know if Shout usually credits the encoders of their discs, but the back of the box lists a Brian Ward as the BD/DVD Producer. I don't own any of their other releases so I don't know if this is something they normally do.

They usually do list the producer and for the record producer =/= compression/authoring.

In the LOTGH thread. If you look a bit, I’m sure you’ll find it.

I decided to put my new BD drive to use and take some screenshots of my Japanese BD of Wicked City. The comparisons are matched with the old Urban Vision DVD because I don't own Discotek's.

Here is the bitrate viewer scan:

The screenshot comparisons:

Shot 2
Shot 3
Shot 4
Shot 5

And finally, here is an Imgur album of the BD screenshots.

The imgur album has lossy jpeg screenshots. There is (or was) an option to disable auto png to jpeg conversion somewhere for png under 5mb, but I can't find it.

And that's a bitrate viewer scan, not BDinfo.

Fixed the software name. Also, I didn’t see an option to store them as .PNG files when I uploaded them and just assumed they wouldn’t be compressed. Maybe because I don’t have an account? Oh well, I have the .PNG files if anyone would like to host them.

I have an account and mine are PNG. Don’t know if that’s why, though.

Created an account and made a new album. It looks good now...

...except the page appears broken whenever I try to link to it.

EDIT: Well, I just had to link to my profile directly to access the images. Whatever works.

Still not seeing the pics. Alternatively, use imgbox, ImgBB or postimg instead for screenshots.

You should be good now. My guess is the album was too fresh earlier.

Wow are the colors really that far off on the UV disc for shots 1 and 5? I can see the skin tones changing a little but not going from peach to gray

Yeah, that last one especially got me. Pretty crazy. However, that disc is so old that who knows what kind of master they were working with.

Yeah the way the Japanese don't take care of older shows, I almost feel like getting the R2 Japanese DVDs of shows since at least they were made before they let the material deteriorate.
