Yeah. The American broadcast system is outdated and the last episode of Game of Thrones is a perfect example- complex imagery with stylized dark lighting ruined by constant artifacting.

I didn't have that problem.

Because I don't watch it. lol

What I meant was actual broadcast TV though. As in OTA. Everything they do is interlaced because of the limited bandwidth afforded to that signal. They aren't cramming episodes on a disc, just dealing with getting you the proper frame at the proper time without worrying about storage constraints. No storage, no constraints from that perspective I guess.

I believe 1080i is the actual broadcast standard here but not positive.

It is. Also, it’s encoded via MPEG-2. So, yeah...

As for banding- well, it's there. But, it's rarely distracting. It's momentary and as said by Dailyan, mostly in darker shots, so it could be a source issue.
It's a source issue - and something I really hoped would've been filtered for the US release considering how much of it there. It's there on the JP BD (Part IV and Jigen's Gravestone were both filtered by sub groups to eliminate it), as well as the UK BD. I've still got the much better US release coming, but it is disappointing to hear confirmation that it's once again present.

I don’t think Justin’s ever filtered a master for release... (the only instance I know of him altering a source for BD was the Galaxy Express 999 films, with the fantastic grain overlays)

IIRC, he stated that he filtered Umineko for NISA due to the amount of banding in the source.

I see. Well, with him doing 2-3 releases per month, he probably wouldn’t have the time to filter Lupin now than if he did it a few years back. Not a jab at anyone, it’s just how things are.

Probably depends on the release. They seem to give him some leeway on releasing stuff. Figure a week each for GE999 films just to add grain and ignoring all the other time they spent getting colors correct, authoring the discs/menus, subs, etc.

Figure what, 18 plus/minus months spent on Cyborg 009?

If Justin told Discotek top brass he wanted to spend extra time on something, guessing they'd give him that.

There's Blu-ray releases in Japan, even though the 1st series was done on film it's an upscale (possibly from composite masters), but it might be the best looking unless it was heavily DNRd.

It's been a long time since I've seen the OVAs, but they really are no substitute for the games, they're only side stories and are mostly forgettable.

The 1st Saturn game is getting fan translated if you can't understand Japanese, hopefully it will be out soon: sakurawarstranslation.com

Will the RightStuf exclusive release of Maquia have a new transfer, or is it the same encode as the previous Shout release?

Nobody knows. The disc is different, as it has extras not on the standard Shout release, but I have no clue if the encode is different.

Does anyone have information on the new Clannad release by Filmconfect Home Entertainment? How does it compare to the US, JP and the previous German release?

Same discs as the previous german release. Quality wise your best bet is watching it on anime-on-demand.

For those curious, the Dynit release of Mirai is a 1:1 clone of the Japanese video encode. (Which itself isn't perfect being "full of compression artifacts," according to a user who PM'd me said screencaps.)

Anyone know what the process was behind Discotek's release of Kyo Kara Maoh! on Blu-ray?

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/134850

It's a digital anime but the Blu-ray is so much better than the DVD.

I guess the R1 DVD shown there was just very bad, while the R2J DVD is great and more or less that was the source footage upscaled to BD?

Geneon also likely received bad masters because back then, their DVDs usually looked the best. So for something from them to look that bad, it likely has to do with the masters they received, no idea who the international rightsholder is.

The compressionist told me. And yes, it's that guy you're a big fan of.
