Not so much anything to do with Video and Audio, but the subtitles on Funimation's Blu-ray of Violet Evergarden Side Story: Eternity and the Auto Memory Doll have been completely retranslated compared to that of the Netflix stream. No two lines appear to be the same. Also of note - the Netflix subs are more or less the dub script with some occasional minor deviations.

[Show spoiler] Also, I'm pretty sure I heard that MVM's release of The Asterisk War was region A compatible as well, although that's not an Anime Limited release. |

Regarding MVM's The Asterisk War, I do own those and I can confirm they are Region A. Other MVM titles I own that are also Region A are Armed Girl’s Machiavellism, Made in Abyss, Mysteria Friends, and Princess Principal. |

Noein and Eden of the East which Anime Limited distributed for FUNimation are also Region A compatible, but those re-used FUNimation's discs. Snow White with the Red Hair is Region B locked however.
As for MVM, the Samurai Champloo SteelBook is Region A compatible, re-uses the Anime Classics discs. |

[Show spoiler] Although I don’t understand Japanese, aside from the BD subtitles having Violet introduce herself to Ms. Lancaster (another student at the boarding school) with her full name (Violet Evergarden) rather than just her first name (Violet), its seems the BD subtitles are likely more literal. Here's an odd one I just personally verified today; MVM's release of Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs is partially region A/B. Disc 1 will play on region A and B players, but disc 2 will only play on region B players. Kind of odd; I'm guessing region A being included on disc 1 was an error of some kind.

So... the FUNimation/Manga Entertainment UHD of Akira isn't even in HDR.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA There's been two reports of SDR only, including the always reliable Geoff D, so it's gotta be true. There goes any reason to buy the UHD. It's a piece of sh*t DNR disaster that's worse than the existing BDs. Apparently the HDR on the JP release was good, so that was its saving grace. Now, it's gone. Hilarious. At least Anime Limited was upfront after asked if Millennium Actress was SDR, but this is golden. |

So, how did the FUNimation release end up being SDR only for their first ever 4K Blu-ray? If this is a mistake, it's quite bad considering they're now also owned by Sony Pictures.
If it's not a mistake, potential theory: Licensing-restrictions, they were only allowed to release a 4K Blu-ray if it was SDR only, making the HDR exclusive to the Japanese release. |

Literally the only reason to purchase any DNR'd 4K BD is for the benefit of improved HDR color grading. Funimation bungling their UHD for a movie like Akira (where HDR would REALLY help the colors pop) is doing the film a gross disservice.

Without the HDR it's basically a pointless release.

Considering there hasn't been any marketing on Funimation's side to suggest Akira was going to have HDR (no huge label on the box and no mention in any product descriptions anywhere), I think this was fully intentional on their part. Doesn't make it any less stupid of course, my assumption is that they were too lazy to figure out how to encode HDR and thought no one would notice or care.
That said, Rightstuf currently has the product labelled as "4K HDR" so someone should probably let them know. |

If a smaller specialty label like Discotek can do proper quality HDR grading on their releases, then Funimation has no excuse. Cobra and the upcoming Cagliostro UHD BDs are going to set a standard for domestic UHD anime releases and other companies are gonna have to follow their example.

Curious to see a comparison between the UK & US release of Demon City Shinjuku and Wicked City in terms of the audio/video quality if anyone has access to those discs.
