It's a f**king disaster, simply put. That FUNi's BD, which uses the broadcast masters via a port from Madman looks infinitely better is very sad.

Here's another comparison, made by Mangaranga. Also includes a screenshot from a fansub release of Netflix stream. You can guess where this is going.

Is it confirmed that Funi/Madman uses the broadcast master (like by comparing ep13)?

If so, we should point it out to them, and the more of us that does it the better. They have issued replacements in the past for similar cases. It's definitely worth a try, I mean for Re:Zero (different issue) they denied that anything was wrong at first, but we won out in the end

It's 100% the broadcast version as it's a clone of the AU discs. To quote the person who made a dual audio version using the JP and AU BDs:
Quote:
The Australian BD release only includes the standard version of episode 13, rather than the extended version from the JPBD. Unfortunately, this means the new scenes are not dubbed. Aside from new scenes being added in the JPBD, a lot of the existing scenes (both video and SFX) were slightly shortened or lengthened, resulting in diferent timings.

One last thing I would like to confirm just to be extra sure before sending Funi an email, is the subs for the tv series is confirmed to be the same as NetFlix's?

It wasn't the case for the Side Story movie so I was hoping that they would have done the same for the tv series too. But they might have just bothered to do it for the movie since it was for a theatrical release for some reason?

I just want to make sure before adding "subtitle issue" to my mail. If I complain about it but I turn out to be wrong, they will likely dismiss my mention of using the tv broadcast at the same time

100% the same subtitles (which are trash).

ok thx.

Time to send them a message then, and try to recruit a few more members from the main thread to pressure Funi in doing a replacement

They did for an audio issue on Code Geass and they also did for the Re:Zero fiasco even though they denied it at first (but ppl kept pressuring them).

There other instances too, but those are the two that quickly popped up in my mind and that I actually got replacement discs from. So it definitely can happen
If you email them, it would be appreciated and it will increase the odds

Pretty much the same place as Re:Zero went? This isn't even the highest-quality fansub release either.

It's kinda amusing, we used to complain about Funi's brightness boosting ruining the darker cuts of an anime, and here we kinda have the opposite problem. It looks like the U.S./U.K. release is trying to boost contrast to have an actual black level hit in scene. But this is a show that is lower contrast and has no true blacks at all at times, so it causes blotchiness in a artificial attempt to expand dynamic range.

The German release is nearly identical in terms of picture quality, so that's it, really.

Even thought he encode sucks the UK DID at least get the extended ep 13 right? I mean they specifically mention it - The Extended version of the series finale 13th episode (Japanese (2.0 audio) with English subtitles only) -- available for the first time on an English language release anywhere in the world.

It does, but it's not worth it when the video compression is SO bad.

Great..... So, what poison do I pick for my first viewing of the show? The FUNimation release which re-uses the Madman discs and thus the TV masters with a bad translation (likely a result of both companies being owned by Sony), or do I watch the UK set that has the Blu-ray masters, has better subtitles, and bad compression?

Other replacement programs:
https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/new...stigma-box-set
https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/new...ker-than-black
https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/new...decode-dvd-set
https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/new...season-dvd-set

Not a lot of noise was made about it, but Sword of the Stranger was missing the subtitles for the Chinese dialogue, and if you contacted FUNimation directly, you could get a replacement disc. There are mistakes that stay though. FUNimation botched the subtitles for the second half of Date A Live III Episode 5. This hasn't been fixed, very few people are even aware it happened.
https://twitter.com/BigOnAnime/statu...47687424471040

They also screwed up the DVD, but not as bad.
https://twitter.com/BigOnAnime/statu...47750431297536

I contacted FUNimation about Date A Live III, they said they were going to look into it, and nothing ever happened.

Why would any label want to take an Aussie encode. I own a few Aussie discs and the quality control on them is...non-existent.

The ones from Madman are solid nowadays. Not flawless, but better than what FUNimation themselves could churn out.

The subtitles are technically improved, but to what degree, I have no clue. I mean, look at the QC that went into the video, so that could very well reflect the state of the subtitles as well.

For Eternity and the Auto Memory Doll, there were English subtitled theatrical releases by Madman and Funimation prior to its Netflix debut in April. The subtitles used for the side story film BD are likely the same used for its theatrical release in AU and NA (subtitled trailers/clips below, which are different from the Netflix subtitles). Hence, there was no need to use the Netflix subtitles.

Well, look at some of these recent european releases, there's clearly no QC either. For some its not a problem because they work with professionals but for some othere…

Was it mentionned that the french release of The Promised Neverland by Kazé France is disappointing?
