Video quality may have a difference, though probably not too significant. The original release was authored by Joel McCray who had a much better track record than David Williams who stopped authoring discs in late 2014. The newer release should have also been authored by him. What's more likely to have a difference is the quality of the translation, the SteelBook should also have a supervising translator credit.

TY for sharing. The RGB level issue affecting the 'fixed' BDs is extremely annoying to me. Enough for it to be a dealbreaker for me I think. Even though we've seen worse issues before am just really tired of seeing the same mistakes happen over and over and over again. I've stopped buying many discs because of this I want to continue supporting physical releases but at this point I'd rather just save my money.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() At least the SDBD is pretty good. Pretty much artifact-free SD video. I've synced the PCM track from Taiwanese DVD to all the episodes. Last edited by NLScavenger; 06-29-2021 at 07:47 AM. |

I assume the Discotek Lady Oscar/Rose of Versailles uses a recent Japanese restoration but I'd love to compare. I've watched about half so far, and comparing it to the old RightStuf DVD, it mostly looks great. One thing I noticed (especially on earlier episodes and on "still" images in episodes) is the sorta frame jitter, which I find pretty common to all TV anime from that era, feels more pronounced on the BluRay than the old DVD but that's probably partly just because the picture is so much clearer. (Apologies for not being the best at describing this).
One odd thing is the ED is *much* "dirtier" image quality wise than they were on the old DVD. But in the bonus credit-less ED it looks like the brighter copy they used for the DVD except, well, without credits. Anyway, overall so far I'm pleased (while France got a deluxe limited edition, they also have one budget release with all forty episodes on *one* Bluray) |

One odd thing comparing Rose of Versailles early episodes to a download I found of the Japanese BluRay, it seems obvious it's the same remaster. The differences in this remaster I mentioned, like how (like a lot of older TV anime) the frame "moves" more than I noticed with the old DVD are the same on the Japanese download. Oddly, the differences I noticed is the intro title card (before the cold opens) are still on the Japanese remaster and still have the slight frame movement of some other shots on the Discotek BluRay.
I also noticed something else on episode three, at the hour and 25 (or so) second mark there's a moment where the frame "jumps" that isn't on the Japanese remaster. Does anyone else notice this? Or am I crazy (I don't think that could be an individual disc defect) Just makes me curious how these releases use the original Japanese remaster or not. |

And now I'm wondering if the Discotek Rose of Versailles/Lady Oscar remaster IS the same as the Japanese BluRay. For the most part they look the same but, for example, Discotek's mostly very clean presentation has a large scratch running through the middle of the screen on episode 7 (the 2 h 38 minute time stamp on disc one) for a good 10 seconds that isn't in the Japanese release... Curious...

Crayon Shin-chan: Crash! Rakuga Kingdom and Almost Four Heroes - Polyband Anime BD (Germany)
It's a pretty good release with English subtitles to boot. the MVM UK Accel World blu ray releases, both Vol 1/2 and the 2nd release with the collection have a sub file glitch in Episode 13 that causes this frame for a few seconds at the end https://i.imgur.com/45F0e9x.png and a video glitch for a couple frames in Episode 24 https://i.imgur.com/jCTrnwa.png , https://i.imgur.com/enywaz8.png and the audio loudness is lowered, I believe that these issues are not present in the US Viz release of Vol 1/2

Just a quick one from me, and a somewhat interesting one for once.
Funimation's BD release of Appare Ranman appears to be filtered - with a deband filter applied and light grain added. There is 100% detail loss, and it varies depending on the scene. Normally "Funimation" and "Filtering" are usually a cause for concern, but I really do not have a problem with their decision to do so this time (assuming they did), if anything just the blanket approach taken. The Japanese BD appears to be, quite frankly, a shit show - full of of blocking and banding of varying severity in practically anything that isn't a grain heavy flashback scene (think Re:Zero S1 before it was "fixed"). You can see three direct comparisons between the JP and US BD here, as well as some episode vs PV comparisons both sourced from Funi's disc here. The episodes themselves are encoded at 31-33mbps. The detail loss varies from minimal to somewhat extreme, with the second image in the JP comparison being the most obvious example (it'd be nice to see scene by scene filtering to avoid this but hey, this is a start) and honestly, in this scenario specifically I'd much rather trade the detail to have a disc that doesn't actively offend my eyes during playback. If a fellow German user pass by, they can provide feedback on their release from Polyband Anime.
One review, which doesn't give any technical info, says PQ gets a 10. Probably still an indicator it may be fair or better than the US/JP release. |
