My bad - moreso as it definitely suffers from the loss of quite a bit of detail.
The German BD is also filtered, albeit with a less aggressive deband filter and no grain added, so it shows way more detail in these two shots. |

Is Funimation's hyouka release good?
I have seen some conflicting info after a quick search in this thread and also not sure if there's any difference between the "complete series" and "essential complete series". |

Seeing some mixed opinions too, varying from "It looks pretty good" to "It's full of noise, banding, etc.". Too bad those older comparison links don't work anymore. |

Looks like Funimation will be releasing a BD for Haibane Renmei. I hope it ends up being an improvement from their DVD release of the series.

That would be a no as their DVDs were downscaled from the terrible Japanese Blu-ray which looks like this. The FUNimatin DVDs are also inferior to the Geneon DVDs.

Darn, I suppose that means they'll likely end up being the same as the Japanese release then. Looks like the Pioneer/Geneon DVDs will continue to be the best release for the series.

Does anyone know if the new release of Kids on the Slope is improved? I have the original Sentai release and my first disc seems to have gotten scratched during a recent move. Looking to possibly upgrade.

Is the Gungrave bluray that Funimation released better video-wise or is this an instance of a digipaint show with a bad upscale?

Anyone know difference in k-on ultimate collection vs old standard BD releases. Disc's seem different in ep count, was anything improved.

Ultimate Collection uses the discs from the LE which had new discs made that fixed issues the old releases suffered from. The subtitles are smaller, and also the K-On! shorts are included for the very first time, they weren't on the Bandai releases of S1, nor any of Sentai's prior releases. Note that they didn't update the credit rolls, those were re-used from the old release.
