What's the general consensus of funimations release of FLCL and what is considered the best English friendly release of the series?

Ever since I first saw the screenshots over 10 years ago well before I knew much about video quality, I hated it and it immediately made me get off the "Blu-ray is always better" train. I've had a burning hatred for smeary upscales ever since, I absolutely cannot stand them in the slightest. I'd personally rather get the Synch-Point DVDs, though those have problems as well, that being aliasing and artifacting. There were screenshots back on the Mania AnimeOnDVD forums, but those are long gone.

Not much care was put into FLCL's Blu-ray release, like in Japan, it was packaged like a box of snacks. This is quite literally how it was released there.

Here's some comparison caps with the DVD:

My quick .02. The Blu-ray looks more aliased here and there but it also looks more clear and detailed. In spite of the crappy upscale, I'd take the Blu-ray over the DVD but I dunno, that's just me. I'll let you all decide for yourselves.

Something to keep in mind, when something is released on Blu-ray and DVD at the same time here, typically the DVDs are downscaled from the Blu-ray masters, so if the Blu-rays have problems, those will carry over to the DVDs. A perfect example is Shakugan no Shana S1-S2, FUNimation used the awful Japanese Blu-ray masters and downscaled them for the DVDs rather than using the Japanese DVD masters which are superior.

The second release is a perfectly normal slipbox with (as far as I remember) a digipak inside.

All the Blu-rays of FLCL are utter crap. The JP DVDs are the best release. While far from reference quality, they lack the major drawbacks of the Blu-rays. That said, audio and extras are superior on other releases, so the NA BD is worth owning for the subbed commentary tracks alone.

I never looked into it, but FUNimation has extras that weren't on the Synch-Point DVDs?

I'm generally not into subbing entire series, but NHK could be an exception!

Default In/Spectre - Viz Media

I'm not going to waste too much time on this - just don't buy it. Viz have been shitting out discs of this quality since K Seven Kings. Despite taking feedback on board to fix their colour space issue previously, this time they evidently have no interest in fixing things. Banding, blocking, incorrect gamma, awful compression - this release has it all. This image is a pretty good example of what you can expect, and I've uploaded a sample clip here so you can see this abomination in motion.

To make things even more amusing, the raw files on disc are 7gb each with a reported bitrate of 35mbps. Scavenger however pointed out that these are actually padded out to an extreme degree, and remuxing to an MKV shows the true bitrate...

Wasn't going to get In/Spectre anyway but knowing that makes it even easier. Just hope Viz doesn't get anymore Crunchy titles, well except the other crappy ones like God of High School, etc.

Is there any reported issues with there JoJo sets? I own most of the standard sets, not the gift sets and they look pretty good, haven't watched part 5 yet.

I was thinking of picking up In/Spectre at some point, but I held off given how Osomatsu turned out. Looks like I made the right call. Hopefully they can fix whatever's going on/find a new authoring house before they release Jujustu Kaisen, or that could be a real shitshow...

So what you're saying is that by extension of this, Jujitsu Kaisen is f***ed...

People weren't shitting on the Jojo/HxH sets from what I remember other than the normal color space issues but I remember K and I think Castlevania was also really bad.
