This is the MediaInfo for the old Bandai release of Gundam 00: A Wakening of the Trailblazer. I hope someone will soon post the same info for the Sunrise/RightStuf release.

I tried pulling the info for the Rightstuf Blu-Ray, this was my first time doing this, so not sure if I did it completely correctly. Didn't seem to get the 2.0 audio tracks.

So, I've got Studio Canal's Miyazaki Box-set, and it's a nice set, but as we know, the PQ isn't as good as Disney or Ghibli's own discs.
I'm watching Cagliostro (1979) and it's really rough. It was released in 2012, before Ghibli and Discotek's BDs in 2014, so I'm assuming it uses an older master- which shows. Quite a lot of noise and more grain than normal. Not terrible nor unwatchable- it looks amazing when 9 feet away like I normally sit, but when I sat closer (2 feet away), it looks really rough. Plus, the back of the standard release says it's 1080i like the original VAP release. The other Studio Canal BDs of the Ghibli films don't look this bad. In fact, most of them look stunning!- although, not as well encoded as the JP releases. It's like a 5 or 6/10 transfer. I'd take this noisy mess over DNR'd crap like Terminator 2 or Predator (though the UHD of that is nice, from what I've seen). Audio is in Japanese DTS HD-MA 5.1, and it's an upmix. The mono track isn't included. Shame, but as my TV is stereo, it sounds great through there, and I don't have any surround setup. The bad Streamline dub is in LPCM 2.0 and is of better quality simply due to being produced later and in native stereo. The Manga Ent. dub, which is probably the best dub to any anime film ever, sadly isn't included. (It's the one where David Hater- Snake from Metal Gear Solid- voices Lupin, and Zenigata has a hilarious voice) I'm debating whether or not to get Discotek's release, being that it's a 1:1 clone with original mono JP track and the superior dub, but that's for another day. |

Get the Discotek BD. It's not even a competition (not sure if the Studio Canal screenshot is correctly deinterlaced, but you can tell how messed up the colors and compression are)

All of VAP's early Lupin Blus are complete, upscale garbage. They were some of the earliest vintage anime on Blu Ray and man does it show. The fact that StudioCanal never updated the disc is awful for European fans that aren't region free (or just don't want to import the Japanese '14 release). Discotek really did give the Criterion treatment for the title and I say it's the definitive release. Now if they could only get on releasing Mamo...

I'm working on my biggest write-up yet... Code Geass.
I will do a full breakdown of all 8 discs, including listing every extra and runtime for everything. The only other series that I will do a bigger write up for is Legend of the Galactic Heroes, but that would be the longest one even in my normal style, due to the length and scale of said series. |

FUNimation are bad at authoring discs. I'm not talking about video compression (that's another thing they get wrong), but the way they lay out their discs suck.
Code Geass Disc 4 is like this: Episodes 22-25 as one file Episodes 22-25 as separate files FUNimation trailers as one file FUNimation trailers as separate files Separate trailers not in that one file Picture Dramas as one file Picture Dramas as separate files Dub Voice Actor interviews (as separate files) Creditless OPs/EDs I'm canceling that Code Geass write-up. Sorry, but this is too much. If they didn't repeat their files over again and in dumb ways (which is wasting space, actually), then I'd do it. But as it is, I give up. Short write-up? Season 1 looks okay- it's upscaled, but looks decent. Banding and aliasing is present but not major issues. Audio is great, though the JP 5.1 mix sucks due to revisionism. Season 2 looks good- from 720p source. No aliasing, though has banding. Audio is on par with Season 1. Bitrates average 26/27 mbps. |
