So I put in my Attack on Titan season 1 BD to finally watch it and on disc 1, episode 1, when the scouting parting returns and hands the mom the arm, moments after it skips like two scenes. Has anybody else had issues with this release? I played it on both my ps3 and ps4 and had the same issue

I was wondering what the best English-subtitled options are for the Rebuild of Evangelion movies. All I've heard is that the Hong Kong 2.22 and US 3.33 should be avoided. 1.11 got a Hong Kong BD release in January, but can't find any info on that release.

Well, I looked at my unused disc and see a a long hair-sized scratch along the the disc. It's curved. I think it's probably a manufacturing error and since it's been so long since I bought it I'm pretty screwed when it comes to getting a free replacement form the seller. Damn. Anybody have a Disc 1 of attack on titan season 1 BD they want to send me? lol *sigh*

Check out this video about how anime is made. If you just want the Cliff notes, then scroll below.
JC Staff: -Scans genga at 1600x960 (the video had it reversed) -Series in question was finished at a resolution of 1504x864 (a weird choice) -Uses smoothing in compositing to get rid of aliasing -Puts episode onto tape (HDCAM) -Does a rush (putting it on HDCAM) with between 50 and 100 animation cuts (out of around 300) -Uses badass Sony PVMs for colour reference (I want a PVM so badly!) -Audio is added in later (because the seiyuu dub over the completed animation) by a third party like Q-Tec (it's okay, calm down. They're not ruining the video at all- they're syncing up the video with audio) Overall, that is pretty cool. So yeah. While Anibin may use nonsensical methods to determine source resolution, it's a fact that oddball resolutions are used for some reason. No idea why (it could provide poor scaling to 1080p or higher)... |

For 1.11 the US and UK discs aren't identical- well kind of. Anime Limited used FUNimation's disc 1:1, but Manga UK didn't.
Here's a comparison: Video: JP: 33.37 mbps (33379 kbps) USA: 34.97 mbps (34972 kbps) Manga UK: 35.00 mbps (35000 kbps) Audio: Japan: Japanese DTS HD-MA 6.1 16-Bit 2658 kbps Japanese Dolby TrueHD 6.1 16-Bit 2337 kbps USA: Japanese Dolby TrueHD 6.1 16-Bit 2283 kbps English Dolby TrueHD 6.1 24-Bit 4429 kbps Manga UK: Japanese Dolby TrueHD 6.1 16-Bit 2285 kbps English Dolby TrueHD 6.1 24-Bit 4435 kbps Sources: 1 2 3 |

And here's Germany (Universum):
Video: 18.99 mbps (18993 kbps) Audio: Japanese DTS HD-MA 5.1 16-Bit 2382 kbps German DTS HD-MA 5.1 16-Bit 2364 kbps Audio was downgraded from 6.1 to 5.1 (I will try to find more. I don't know why, but I feel like trying to find all the stats of it. Just a weird thing.) |

The UK 1.11 screenshots look pretty good compared to JP.
So I should probably pick up the UK (or US?) 1.11, UK/US 2.22 and HK 3.33 for the best English subtitled BDs. The Dynit BD is also an option, but I'd prefer not needing to add custom subtitles unless there's no good English subtitled alternative. |

I've watched the whole thing. Hearing the late Unshou Ishizuka as Guld makes me feel a bit sad. ![]() So this HD remaster of this 90's high quality cell-animated OVA looks amazing. The CGI elements have also aged very gracefully (such a far cry from the CGI helicopter scene in 1983's Golgo 13: The Professional). Most importantly, the remaster retains a filmic quality, unlike the rather shoddily done DYRL remaster. The aspect ratio has been expanded from 1.37:1 to the somewhat unusual 1.40:1, which makes for a ever so slightly wider image. The audio is also great, which is important because the action and music play such an integral role in the Macross experience. I've almost forgotten how great Yoko Kanno's soundtrack is. Hearing "After, In the Dark" at the end of OVA 1-3 always gives me the chills. So apparently the same video as Dynit for 1.11... But I still don't want to support Dybex whenever possible. They're almost the exact opposite of their Italian counterpart.
I have heard the Dybex 2.22 and 3.33 BDs have a lot of banding/aliasing, and furthermore the Dutch subtitles are translated from the French subtitles. Dybex has also shamelessly used Google Translate at some point to translate the French backcover of 2.22 into Dutch, but this got fixed before the release after people had pointed it out. |
