+ the fact that the adaptation is horrible they keep the -san/-kun-Sama/etc. in the subs and.... the dub!!!!! yeah the dub, so you can hear in french " Oh bonjour Shinji-KOUNE" or "Bonjour Misato-SANE". that's atrocious. |

I'm gonna be working on a cool project- make the definitive version of 1988's Akira. Best video, all audio options.
I don't own any version of the film, but the releases out are cheap so I'll pick them up soon. Here's what I know, and the stats so far: Video is sourced from the 2018 Dynit Italian BD, because it is not windowboxed (like the FUNi version) and has the highest bitrate (which mp3dom says is around 32 mbps). Audio: Japanese Dolby TrueHD 5.1 24-Bit 192 kHz 14340 kbps (Bandai BD) Japanese LPCM 2.0 16-Bit 48 kHz 1536 kbps (Bandai BD) Japanese Dolby Digital 5.1 48 kHz 640 kbps (Bandai BD) (2001 Dub) English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 16-Bit 96 kHz 2045 kbps (FUNimation BD) (1989 Dub) English Dolby TrueHD 2.0 16-Bit 96 kHz 1323 kbps (FUNimation BD) Total Audio Bitrate: 19884 kbps (19.88 mbps) Obviously it won't fit on a Blu-ray disc. It'll be over 50GB easily, and the bitrate limit would not support this. The hardest part would be syncing the audio and subtitles to the video, but it would make for a cool project. With all the options, nobody would be left out. |

Honorifics are fine in subtitles, depending on the project (I saw Night is Short by Yuasa and the main guy is referred to only by "Senpai", so instances like that are fine), but in a dub? Hearing bad voice acting with bad translations makes it even worse...

Here's the stats for Sentai's release of No Game No Life Zero (from that well known anime site with cats in the name):
Video: 1080p MPEG-4 AVC 21.83 mbps AVG (21830 kbps) 30 mbps MAX Audio: Japanese DTS HD-MA 5.1 24-Bit 3727 kbps English DTS HD-MA 5.1 24-Bit 3563 kbps Spanish DTS HD-MA 5.1 24-Bit 3563 kbps Surprised to see Spanish there, but besides that, I don't think anyone will complain about the audio. The video though? Even though I don't own it or have never seen any screenshots, it's too low. The total size of the film is 24.7GB. Not sure if it's on a BD-25 or 50, as it could go either way, depending on if there are any extras. Regardless, that's too low for a film like that. |

Legend of the Galactic Heroes
(Sentai) Before we even discuss picture quality, I have to talk about how the series was produced and its home video history- as failing to do so can give false expectations about what is being presented. Legend of the Galactic Heroes is a 110 episode OVA series produced between 1988 and 1997. It was shot on 16mm film, being made on cels, and was originally released on both VHS and Laserdisc. When DVD started to become a thing, LOTGH was an early title, but to convince people to spend an insane amount of money on the new DVDs, several scenes from the first 2 seasons (the first 54 episodes) were reanimated from scratch. Not bad right? Wrong. These were done digitally, and while not inherently bad, the character designs were different, the colours were wrong, and it looked cheaper than the cel artwork. As a result, these have been included in every release of the series onwards. There is NO way to view the original, and superior looking scenes without watching it on Laserdisc and/or VHS. And, as a result, because of that, the series is upscaled. No HD scans were produced for the series, as that would be expensive, so the original scans used for the DVD release, and the original masters of the reanimated scenes were used for the Blu-ray. With that out of the way... Disc 1 (Episodes 1-8): 38.5GB Episode 1: 4.51GB Video: 1080i MPEG-4 AVC 21.6 mbps AVG 35 mbps MAX 3.75 GB Audio: Japanese DTS HD-MA 5.1 24-Bit 4418 kbps Okay, first, the audio. On the packaging, Sentai lists Japanese DTS HD-MA 2.0, but it's actually the 5.1 mix created for the DVDs. It sounds great. Zero issues in terms of clarity. Not sure how well it utilizes all 6 channels, but I'm happy. The video... being an upscale of what is an SD transfer of 16mm film, it looks as good as you can get. Clarity is good, lines are sharp and not aliased, grain is present, and colour is rich and vibrant. There is an inherent softness to upscaled content, but here it's okay. It's near perfect given the source... That being said, I hate that it's interlaced. Not that it's interlaced over progressive, but due to frame rate. It's at a constant 29.97 fps and it looks kinda weird. I'm assuming this is because those ugly AF re-animated scenes were done at that frame rate, but in normal footage (everything not re-drawn) it looks weird, most prevalent in scenes with characters moving- it looks weird. Kind of distracting, but it's not the worst thing ever. Overall, it is probably the best the show will ever look outside of a new HD remaster. I'm happy with it, but the interlacing being somewhat distracting, I'm not sure if this was present on the Japanese Blu-rays or not. While I've read they are 1080p, there is no definitive proof it was progressive from what I've found. If it is interlaced, then that must be a source thing. If not, Sentai might've been sent a somewhat inferior master. Regardless, it's Legend of the Galactic Heroes. The greatest anime ever made (fight me), so it's something I'm happy to own. Next time, I'll be looking at the movies, and then Gaiden. |

I re-read the old thread over at TFP, and the guys who imported it back in the day confirmed that the Japanese discs are also 1080i.

Okay, there's one other thing. You know how the series gives the name and rank of a character when we first see them? Well, on the Laserdisc it was burned into the image, so when subbed, the Japanese text was still there. On the DVD and Blu-ray, I assume it's a subtitle file, as the fansubs of the BD have them replaced with English.
Here, they don't show up. Yeah, I don't see them. There's only one subtitle track, and they don't show up in places where they're supposed to. Not sure if it's intentional on Sentai's part, or if it was a mistake, but I want to make it aware. |

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNND the movies are upscales. Not the HD versions.
Movie 1 looks like s**t. The series upscale is good, probably because it had a good SD source to begin with. This is f**king horrible. ![]() Granted, it's from VLC and it's not 100% accurate to how it would look on a TV, and Imgur converted it to a JPEG, but damn is it ugly. Sentai encoded it at 29.3 mbps, which is higher than almost all of their releases. They knew they had a poor source, and even with a high bitrate, it looks horrible. Still looks better than Re:Zero, to me, at least... |

^^ I certainly don't as yet have enough "thread cred" to offer any sort of expert opinion but, I would think they did the best job possible with what they have?
