Can that just happen to individual discs when they are being manufactured or would it be a whole batch/run? I've had those same blocks crop up (Sentai's Ninja Scroll, Legend of Korra) and a replacement disc from the retailer (not the publisher) or just buying a new set usualy fixed the problem. If it's a surface problem (problems on reading the disc) you get other kind of artifacts. In any case, you can get a free software (Nero DiscSpeed) that lets you verify the disc surface so you see instantly if there's something wrong with the disc surface.

In this case there are more than one single user that report the exact same artifacts in the exactly same frame... it's clearly something already encoded and so in every disc.

Those type of artifacts mostly appears when there are reading problems on the master tape. It doesn't necessarily means it's really "on tape". It may be dirt or similar on the reading heads of the deck, so another attempt with the same tape may already be enough to fix it.

Thanks! I'll definitely look into Nero DiscSpeed. I've had this happen maybe 3-4 times in the last couple of years and was just curious as to the how it occurs.

I'm currently re-evaluating Yu Yu Hakusho (and not because LordCrumb now has his profile pic set to Yuskuke) mainly because it's back in the days where I had my data from Media Info only. Now that I'm using Bitrate Viewer, more accurate results can come out.

If you want a small spoiler- it's fine. I''m just posting updated bitrates, so I'll comment on the PQ. Very much watchable, but not as great as it's made out to be. Inconsistent grain levels, a bit too much low pass filter applied, some macroblocking (though that's rare), and some banding, though less than your typical FUNi release, because the grain helps to hide it, as it's a dither of sorts. PQ varies from scene to scene. Most of it it in the 7/10 range, with moments being 9 or 10/10, but in some rare instances, it's 3 or 4/10, but that's rare and only happens for like a second or two at a time. Overall, I'd say it's a 6/10. Great restoration but could use better encoding.

When I was watching the series awhile back; the only episode that stuck out as poor, to me, was “Lamenting Beauty”. I don’t know if it was due to the source material or the encoding.

Agreed. It's very frustrating. At least the TV series discs look pretty good. I think they're the same discs as before, haven't checked yet. (The new 20th Anniversary feature is literally just a 16-min Kouichi Yamadera interview alone on a whole disc.)

There’s a lot of costs involved in reauthoring, even if you do it yourself. Thousands in new AACS fees, in addition to what the replicator will charge to redo the glass master. So it’s understandable to make a quick BD-25 rather than redo 4 BD-50s.

Is Funimation ever going to realize or care that their production team sucks at encoding? They're really the only US anime company that still consistently puts out discs with mediocre encodes these days.

There is no reason for a company with their money and resources to be putting out a disc with worse video quality than a budget release.

This meme that higher bitrate always equals better image quality needs to die. Unless low bitrates introduce artifacts it's perfectly fine. Especially for a 4:3 anime. You'll probably gain nothing by cranking up the bitrate at a certain point except placebo maybe.

I obviously know that. I was thinking it would have the highest spikes because there’s more movement in the image than most episodes. I’m not disappointed in any way, I simply thought that maybe it would be too much for average bitrates.

I’ve been trying to make the point that high Bitrate doesn’t always matter as well, but here it was more of an academic curiosity.

Best release hands-down.

-Less artifacts (clrearly visble on the tire (1er screenshot).
-no windowboxing on the left & right (Dynit VS UK)
-less blurry (clearly visible on the hair (last screenshot).

Unless a new remaster 4K from Japan, the video quality for this movie cannot be better than this.

At least the TV series discs look pretty good. I think they're the same discs as before, haven't checked yet. (The new 20th Anniversary feature is literally just a 16-min Kouichi Yamadera interview alone on a whole disc.) Me: Okay. Wait, what? They devoted a whole disc just to a 16 minute extra rather than re-encode/author the series? Just what?! I hope they're new discs- Anime Limited's CE is re-using their old discs, so here's to hoping FUNi can redeem themselves... Justin: There’s a lot of costs involved in reauthoring, even if you do it yourself. Thousands in new AACS fees, in addition to what the replicator will charge to redo the glass master. So it’s understandable to make a quick BD-25 rather than redo 4 BD-50s. --- I'll update this if the discs are actually new.

Unless a new remaster 4K from Japan, the video quality for this movie cannot be better than this.
