In regards to subs from Sentai for 4:3/1.33:1 anime, Legend of the Galactic Heroes has subs that go beyond the frame, but then again, LOTGH is a show where it’s all dialogue, half of the time monologuing!

Was it the normal Sentai large yellow subs? On HiDive I remember seeing smaller white subs in a serifed font.

I don’t have it, but bitrates are 30-40 mbps, wheraes FUNi was 3-40 mbps with insane inconsistencies. FUNi has TrueHD tracks (Stereo JP and English 5.1) both at 24-Bit, but Aniplex has LPCM 2.0 stereo at 1536 kbps (16-Bit).

Audio is a downgrade for dub fans (I’m not one, but it sucks it was downgraded), but video should be a huge improvement.

The best option would be to mux the FUNi Dub audio with the Aniplex video and JP Stereo. But since the show is 64 episodes, it’d be a pain to do...

Eh losing the 5.1 upmix for the dub isn't that big of a deal IMO. It wasn't created from native 5.1 stems so using something like Pro Logic II with the stereo track should suffice. I find that Funi's upmixes are usually not that much different outside of some level adjustments.

Edit: The outline on the subs will be thicker and easier to read on the disc release is the main difference.
Saw that but not in the US so not an option unfortunately.

Tried to rewatch Patlabor recently and the subtitles were such a bother. I sit fairly close to my 55" and the needlessly huge subtitles actually make things harder because my eyes have to scan a much larger area to take in all the information.

I made a little comparaison to show that the Kizumonogatari trilogy also got shafted for the Blu-ray release.

How did anyone get a copy of the theatrical version? I like the added detail of the muscle in Kiss Shot's stump.

I got the theatrical versions of these 3 movies via Wakanim, a European streaming service.
Their Digital versions of the movies are the theatrical one.

Was going to ask about Aniplex's FMA.

So a huge a improvement? Damn. $200 hurts, but I may do it then.

Guess I shouldn't be surprised that someone could improve on a Funimation release

Aniplex uses the Japanese encode, so it’s a better product. If you already own Brotherhood, I’m not sure if it’s worth the upgrade for $200, but if you don’t, then it’s the definitive release.

Okay...

Because Yuripa found my stuff questionable, and because I didn’t clarify: BEST WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES:

GitS ‘95: JP UHD or JP 2017 Re-release (can be had for like $40) Best western is Anchor Bay US/Manga UK
GitS Innocence: JP Ultimate Edition (best JP release) or FUNi BD (best western release)
SAC TV: Korean BDs (dub and subs) or UK if you need dub and subs (if not, Italian Dynit release- no English subs nor dub)
SAC OVAs: JP/US are similar if not the same (UK ones are upscales- skip)
Solid State Society: JP/US (same as OVAs)
Arise: JP/FUNi (FUNi version is virtually identical)
New Movie: JP (no idea about FUNi, but their bitrate seems good enough)

I have to disagree, I own the French/italian BD (Dybex/Dynit) and the PQ is on par with the standart JP Blu-ray (not the new 4K) so I higly higly doubt that the Funi BD is better, unless you show me some proofs.

Also, I don't own the italian release for the '95 movie but since Dynit is also involved, I would-not say that the US/UK set are the best (outside Japan) unless I can compare.

Worth mentioning that the Korean BD English dub has a mixing issue in episode 22 of 2nd GIG during Batou and Gouda's conversation (Not present in the UK BD).

Best with English subtitles. I should’ve made that clear. In no way do I think FUNi could make a good release like that.

Not everyone can speak French or Italian so I tried to exclude them (SAC was the exception since that show is f**ked in the US/UK)
