I, of course, got it from Sentai's sale. It was, what, $17? Pretty crazy price for a great release of a classic show. I had to give it a shot.

It's 29.97Hz and not the usual 23.976, but aside from that...

It better be 29.97Hz, otherwise we'd have missing frames in a number of scenes. I dunno why, but a few scenes -- and ONLY a few scenes -- feature pans and zooms done at roughly 30fps. Then again, it's an early digipaint show, it was fairly common at the time, but typically that would be uniform across the show.

No screenshots but the ReLife OVA's have some really bad banding during some scenes lol (though I didn't notice it until ep 3)

Anyone get Sentai's release of UQ Holder? It apparently includes the OADs (OVAs) which were DVD-only in Japan, so I was wondering if they were upscales or not.

I got confirmation from Madman that their fixed Re:Zero Part I is encoded by... FAILimation. Yeah...

I kind of get it, as it’s under their agreement:
Quote:
It will be Funimation as we are just importing their finished products and are only their distributors
And it’ll be better, as it uses new masters, but I was hoping for a Madman encode. Yeah, they messed up Kimi no na wa, but they can do good work- their Erased is visually 1:1 identical to Aniplex’s release (and it isn’t the same encode), and their other encoded are generally fine. Plus, they’d be more willing to use 2 BD-50s than FUNi.

Does Anime Ltd.'s Erased use the Madman encode?

I asked my friend in DE, and he told me that he doesn't remember any loss of quality, compared to the TV episodes. He didn't watch the show on his higher-end setup, so I wouldn't consider the HD-ness of the OVAs 100% confirmed.

Picked up a used Cowboy Bebop movie DVD. Not sure if the forced québécois subtitles mean it is a pirated copy or if it just is Sony’s usual incompetence.

No, the forum just has an annoying habit of resizing images to 280p.

I always use Imgur, so as to avoid that issue.

Okay. I've seen the Japanese blu-ray, but I wasn't impressed with its video quality. They did too much digital manipulation to the image.

What do you mean? I've watched my BD-Boxes twice and nothing looked unnatural to me. Plenty of film grain and the colors looked very accurate compared to the cels I own.

16mm has a gritty feel to it, with thicker and more pronounced grain. I’ve seen screen caps of the JP BD and it looks fine. It’s not 100% perfect, but it captures the 16mm aesthetic well.

(If you want an extreme example of 16mm anime, Urusei Yatsura’s BDs have very little, if any, digital refinements- the non DNR stuff- providing a raw 16mm experience. I like it, but most people will hate it because there’s a LOT of grain, and some noise)

I assume you're talkin about Viz's release right? Does it have any compression issues?

EDIT

Woops I was thinkin about a different series, this was Japan only. My mistake. lmao
