Anyone have comparison shots between Funi/Aniplex FMABH release? I wanted to see difference for it before considering upgrading.

Why? Well, besides the obvious banding, it's the fact that the grainy nature of the film makes it harder to introduce banding. Simply, to avoid banding, a compressionist applies a dither to the area in question to reduce or remove it. Film grain acts in the same way. Okada Mari must've wanted a very filmic image, so there's a lot of grain- as such, the chances of banding are reduced, but, it provides a new challenge- maintain the detail.

Maquia is obviously a digital film, and the grain (or "video noise acting as grain" if you prefer) is artificial. But, because it is on top of the original composited layer, it provides no extra detail, however, due to its inclusion, failing to render the grain with careful compression results in other artifacts.

So here, I doubt it's a source issue, as screenshots of the JP BD here don't show any banding (or if there was any, it's really minor), but rather very poor compression. The other screenshots Pika provided aren't bad, but I have a feeling that with a different approach to compression, involving locked subtitles rather than hardcoded ones, a higher bitrate, alternate angles for the credits and other tweaks, it could look better. As it, it's not terrible nor even bad, but the practice of hardcoded subs is unacceptable in the year 2019.

Would it be possible to get the media info for Maquia? I’m mostly interested in the audio specs.

Japanese DTS-HD MA 5.1 48kHz 24-Bit and the same for English. I downy have the disc, so I don’t know the exact bitrates, but that’s what I know for certain.

Unsure about it being better video quality, but Non Non Biyori complete collection seems to have more discs than original release. This newer release has it broken down with disc one being episodes 1-9 and disc two being 10-13+ extras. Original collections had all thirteen on a single disc. Sentai seems to do that a lot because my Shirobako blu-rays are same thing. 13 on a single disc.

Should be better, but not sure how much of an improvement it is. I haven’t seen screenshots of either release, so I can’t help there.

I only have the recent release. It sucks because first time buyers actually get a worse copy then. They'll probably do same with Shirobako and it's like why buy a Sentai release right away. You better off waiting on them. (Unless you want one of the limited editions they do.)

Being on a single disc doesn't necessarily mean it's worse. That entirely depends on how well the disc was encoded and compressed. Sentai have done some really top notch single cour discs like Blue Spring Ride and One Week Friends for a couple examples.

The original BDs for Non Non Biyori and Shirobako are from 2015 and 16 respectively so depending on the compressionist that worked on them, there might not be any real improvement on the re-releases. I haven't seen either one myself though.

I always thought more discs was better. As Japanese releases usually only have 1-3 episodes on a single disc and are much higher quality. I guess you could have more discs, but a bad encode on western copies though.

Bad encodes are bad encodes. Disc count won't improve that. Anything above 7 episodes per BD50 is questionable at best imo.

Higher disc count makes it possible for better encoding, but it’s all on the compressionist. It’s possible to make a good encode with 8+ episodes per disc, but the compressionist better know what they’re doing. In general, I agree with the 7 episode limit. That allows for a 30mbps encore and shows that the compressionist may know what they’re doing.

There are exceptions- mp3dom and Justin Sevakis can do no wrong regardless of disc count- but they are just a select few individuals.

I think Aniplex is only American licenser which does that. Every Funimation or Sentai release is at least 8-9+ episodes a disc. My Kill La Kill and Gurren Lagann sets have like 4-5 episodes a disc. I personally don't care enough to buy Japanese releases though, with them being 4-5x cost and usually quality difference isn't noticeable enough. Unless you get a really bad release like Re:Zero.

I have both the original 1 disc release of Non Non Biyori and the complete, 4 disc collection. I had a very quick look at episode 1 when I first got the latter, and it's almost identical. Couldn't spot any difference between screenshots, and while I don't remember exact numbers, filesizes and bitrates for the episodes were almost exactly the same.

Keeping my fingers crossed with Ideon, it's like 8 or 9 eps per disc I believe. Ouchies.

Sentai's been putting out good 9-ep discs for years now.

Disc Title: Tsuredure Children Shorts
Video: MPEG-4 AVC Video / 0 kbps / 1080p / 23.976 fps / 16:9 / High Profile 4.1
Around 3.8gb per episode except one is 4.1gb
Audio: English / Dolby TrueHD Audio / 5.1 / 48 kHz / 16-bit (AC3 Embedded: 5.1 / 48 kHz / 448 kbps)
Audio: Japanese / Dolby TrueHD Audio / 2.0 / 48 kHz / 16-bit (AC3 Embedded: 2.0 / 48 kHz / 192 kbps / DN -5dB)

Screenshots

The show is pretty bright and I couldn't find any good dark scenes skipping around a few episodes. The OP/ED do have credits hardsubbed into them also (I think Love Live Sunshine did this too you guys said). Bitrate is pretty high and the whole series is on one BD50.

Fate/Apocrypha Set 1 Aniplex USA.

The first part of the show (12 episodes) are split on 3BD50 (I've seen reviews saying 4, it's wrong the 4th disc is the OST.)
Solid encode as alway from AoA/AoJ, there's some very minor Banding but nothing too bad.
The audio in PCM 24 bits (for both audio tracjk JP/english) are very strong too, nothing to report here.
