Guess I'll have to hold out hope that the Australian release is good.

They DGAF. They don’t care one bit. Load of plebs...

Funimation are the absolute bottom of the barrel when it comes to video quality and they've been terrible going all the way back to the early days of DVD. Video quality is something the company has never given two shits about at all. I remember when it took years of fan complaints just to get them to stop using alternate angles on DVDs and how wretched the compression was on all of those discs.

These days, Viz is the only other anime company that are even close to Funi's level of awfulness. Edit: And Media Blasters, I forget they exist sometimes.

I thought that was a cool feature, honestly.
No reason you couldn't do the same thing with BDs and seamless branching triggered by language selection.

Yeah the show looks better in mpc/madvr for me but yeah! lol

I do wonder what causes the big inconsistency in Funi though. This release definitely is an exception but there is a huge difference in quality from shows like Yamato to others.

I agree, but seamless branching takes way more time to encode. And we know how lazy FUNi is. They spent probably a couple months when the BD format came out and spent it making settings they can use for all their discs.

Justin does the same thing, but his settings are better, and he checks the final output to see how it turned out.

I gotta feel sorry for the bloke who did the Star Trek BDs for Paramount. The amount of scenes that have either original or optional effects are insane.

Yamato is 2 BD-50s with a higher Bitrate (30 mbps vs 20 mbps), but I doubt that bitrates and disc size are the issue. They’ve managed to produce f**king upscales with less banding than that (Ouran and Full Metal Panic- And have higher bitrates too). I guess they just did some setting to average 20 mbps with a max cap of 40 mbps, and just ran with it.

I have no idea if the person who did it physically was at FUNimation when doing it, or is a freelancer like Justin- who works for several clients.

Just in case anyone was wondering: the Manga UK BD of 5 Centimeters per Second is a port of the US BD. Same menus, same bitrates, same yellow subtitles.

Screenshots

Bitrate viewer report:

AVG: 34853 kbps | MAX: 52879 kbps

What is it with yellow subtitles coming back from... wherever they went for a while, lately?

Things like this are the reason why I am slowly replacing the Funi BD's I bought over the years with UK, AU or Japanese releases. I honestly do not want to give Funimation any more money until they get their act straight (spoiler alert: they'll never get their act straight).

I believe Gouki posted a while back about taking a similar stance on Funimation, which I have now adopted myself. Gouki--if you're reading this, what was the issue with Funi's release of Shin Godzilla? It's about time I dumped my Failmation copy in favor of something better.

FUNimation replaced the onscreen Japanese text in Shin Godzilla for English text. The Manga UK BD retains the Japanese text.

Into the bin it goes! Thanks professorwho. Now to pick up the UK disc. I'd like to get the UHD but it's not English friendly at all (to my knowledge).

The screenshots are compressed, lossy jpegs. The disc has a high-bitrate AVC encode that averages in the mid-30s. There isn't significant banding in Shout's disc.

I don't see the point to post that kind of reviews then, unless someone post lossless .PNG screenshots (Not via VLC), nobody can tell if the encode is good or not.

Also Shout use an automatic encode system (constant bitrate) wich is most of the time bad, so even if the bitrate is around 30Mps, in reality it doesn't mean anything, ths visual can still be bad.

That's why the peoples in this thread take time to post accurate infos/screengrabs (Via BitrateGraph, mediainfo, lossless PNG), so nothing is left to "appreciation".

If I remember correctly (that funi disc is in a landfill somewhere), they replaced the giant Eva locations/descriptions/titles with either nothing or small English text.

I would have been less upset if they just translated everything, but just deleting information is where I throw up my hands.

UK replacement is on the way as we speak. Thanks for the info.
