I'm excited to see how the UK release fares (presumably VERY well) as I have the US release but it got to me in hideous condition and couldn't be replaced.

To be fair, Anime Limited literally just received an early shipment at their stall halfway into today. Apparently it's going to be out mid to late next month.
I wasn't planning to buy it initially but I'm glad I did.

I remember seeing the disc layout some weeks back and hoped that this would be the case. Glad to hear confirmation of it. Time to preorder it.

Vincentric, as per your request in the Anime Haul thread, the MakeMKV results of Puella Magi Madoka Magica UK discs. What a waste of space is all i can say

Guess it doesn't come anywhere near the size of the Aniplex discs ?

Two million thanks, my man.

That is some weak sauce. Even for a BD25, there's a good chunk of it not being used. Check out Sylon's post from a few pages back:

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...&postcount=228

He has the AU release, which now looks exactly the same as the UK one.

I'll probably pick up the Aniplex BDs pretty soon. But if anyone wants to share some data on those first, it would be more than welcome.

No problem at all. My first reaction was exactly like yours and also that of Sylon, what a terrible waste of space

Thanks Naiera. No actual surprise there, and was expecting at least double figures compared to the Manga release.

Fired up some SNAFU.

It's a monolingual release so I guess we should be thankful they didn't try to stuff every ep into one disc. But still, data seems really low - 4GBs per ep | around 3.7gb for the video and 300mb for the audio. That's bottom of the barrel territory even by Funi/Sentai standards, they usually go a few hundred MB higher.

Went in expecting to see some real bad video quality.

Never judge a book I guess.

The show looks pretty great, dare I say almost AoA quality. There's very little to no banding. Even compression issues are almost non-existent. There's still some of it but very few and far. Am not sure how they got it to look so good with such a low amount of data.

First 8 screenies are from ep 1, the rest from ep 9 -

Have a quick comparison for Appleseed.

The Geneon R1 DVD and the recently released Sentai Select (w/AVC codec) BD.

The BD, predictably, has finer detail and less compression -

01 Geneon R1 DVD | Sentai AVC BD

The BD would be the clear winner but it seems to have issues with its gamma/brightness. It looks too bright, washed out and worst of all, banding is a lot more visible in the BD as a result (comparison 3 and 7 in particular) -

02 Geneon R1 DVD | Sentai AVC BD

03 Geneon R1 DVD | Sentai AVC BD

04 Geneon R1 DVD | Sentai AVC BD

05 Geneon R1 DVD | Sentai AVC BD

06 Geneon R1 DVD | Sentai AVC BD

07 Geneon R1 DVD | Sentai AVC BD

Despite the increased clarity and detail seen in the BD, I actually think the DVD looks better because of the better contrast and reduced banding it has to offer.

I don't have access to the older Sentai BD (w/VC-1 codec) to compare.

Edit; stat wise, the DVD is rolling with 6.1 GB of total data (don't have video and audio break down). The BD has 22.1 GB | 16.7 GB for the video and 5.4 for the audio.

The problem with the screenies is that I don't have Photoshop or anything fancy like that, so I can't upscale the DVD screenies bicubically like I believe people do when they compare DVD to Blu-ray.

I've put all the pics in the spoiler below. Straight from VLC in PNG, but probably not properly done for the DVD because anamorphic or whatever.

[Show spoiler]

It's not a great upscale. It's not terrible either, like Toradora. Some shots are gorgeous and others are damn near horrible. I haven't had the DVD in my Oppo, but there's no way it'd compare to even a shaky upscale like this.

We'll finish off with my favourite shot from the entire series

Personally when I do like DVD screenshots (I have no way of capturing BD's currently), I just use print screen in Media Player Classic when I'm in fullscreen to capture them. That's probably not the best way, but the only way I'm able to do so myself.

Anyway, just asked someone I know on Twitter to take your DVD shots and upscale them to 1440x1080 using what he called bilinear upscaling with no changes.

Three
Four

He also did it using something called "NNEDI3_rpow2", also with no changes.

Comparing these to the BD, and I currently prefer the DVD. It doesn't look as awful to me as some I've heard describe it, but it looks a bit too smudged. And man, was hoping the DVD would look much, much better than the Hulu streams, seems that's not the case. Wonder how the R2's compared.

I'm on a Mac, so VLC was the best option for me.

Even with a terrible upscale like Toradora, the DVD doesn't compare. I de-interlace in my Oppo BDP-103 and upscale in my Lumagen RadianceXD, so it doesn't get much better. 108 inches just reveals too much for a DVD to upscale well enough, compared to something that's actually sort of HD, even though they've mistreated it by being idiots.

RahXephon upscale looks decent. Flipping back and forth between tabs I could see some nice differences such as increased clarity and improved color saturation. But the line detail can look more smeared than the dvd at times but I've seen worse.

OK, sorry, but just to clarify, in Naiera's post I take it the first image is DVD, second image is the blu-ray? And what series is that? I can't really tell from the conversation, too many series being discussed/compared at the same time, and the images are from a series I haven't seen yet so I don't recognize them... Still pretty much a noob after less than 3 years of anime viewing and collecting...

We're talking about RahXephon, the series that's most known for being considered by many an Evangelion rip-off by BONES.
