I also bought LOTGH, but in its case, the JP masters are 30i because the sh*tty re-animated scenes are 30i, and they encoded it all at 30i for some reason- all of it, the Japanese source, that is.

Sentai and Maiden JP can do good work in a progressive source, but interlaced? Yeah. They could use some help.

Yeah, I was aware of the 30i source on LotGH as I have 2 of the Japanese releases. The difference being they don't have built-in frame errors like the Sentai release or I missed it on my frame by frame look.

STILL, I am glad to have it and that it received an actual English language release. Even without the name cards for locations and people.

And the answer I got back from Maiden/Sentai is basically "this is as good as it gets." We'll never know if it is a source issue or Sentai/Maiden. Given the other evidence, I lean towards Sentai/Maiden.

Watched every episode. The PQ is fantastic. Sympathy for the Devil & Black Dog Serenade, imo the worst looking episodes on the Funi BD, looked excellent on the Dybex BD. I could finally sit back and relax instead of having to press pause each time the Funi BD ruined my suspension of disbelief.

My only nitpick is this mistake in the end credits of every episode:

The errors are actually more widescpread than I had initially thought and on viewing, you can see stair stepping in some of the lines because of how badly they botched this. It's bad. Sad part is, in terms of color and clarity, this is the best it has ever looked. But I almost certainly want to go back to the composite master CPM release to avoid the 24 to 30 fps errors.

Funny thing is, you know the Sentai white credit/black background credit crawl? It suffers the exact same issue and looks completely terrible on the SD on BD VOTOMS release.

I will email them again. Not sure how they could botch this so badly.
The credit scroll having the same issue suggests to me that it's likely an encode problem.

I'm wondering if this could be an incorrect flagging issue. I assume 480i on BD is the same as DVD where it has flags that tells the de-interlacer whether the material is field or frame. I recall some Geneon DVDs years ago were encoded with incorrect flags which would cause similar ghosting and aliasing.

Did Maiden Japan use AVC or MPEG-2 for Votoms?

Solid effort by Shout for Liz and the Blue Bird. I believe Pony Canyon did the Japanese BD.

Yes. Pony Canyon did the JP BD, which averages 29.84 mbps. That’s low for a JP BD because for some reason PonyCan decided to make all the commentary tracks lossless DTS instead of lossy. Audio is LPCM 5.1 at 24-bit, which still allows for a very high Bitrate, but with the lossless commentaries, it’s lower than normal. Still, the Japanese encode is very good with artifacts being nearly non-existent.

Though I have to say, I am disappointed Shout didn’t use a BD-50. I don’t have the stats, but if they’re good enough- and with better quality screen caps- then it may be a good alternative to the JP BD.

Looked at Xabungle which has the same issues and its not a flagging issue, its completely an encoding issue. They tried to encode it at 30i and failed, Discotek SD Blu-ray's are encoded at 24p and use 3:2 pulldown.

It’s not a big issue. The footage lost wasn’t that important. You seem to be making a big deal out of it lately- I’d get over it. It’s not a huge loss.

There's a second mistake: how Edward's name is written. You don't add "st", "nd", "rd", or "th" to roman numerals that indicate generations. It should be written as "Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky IV" (with "IV" being pronounced "the fourth" when spoken).

This is in line with the original Japanese "エドワード・ウォン・ハウ・ペペル・チブルスキー4世", with "4世" (pronounced "yonsei") representing the generation.

Does anyone here have any of the other SD-BDs from Sentai/Maiden Japan that have been released so far; Kino's Journey, Hataraki-Man, Human Crossing, Princess Resurrection, or Rocket Girls?

I'm just wanting to know if the encoding problems of Votoms and Xabungle extend to their other SD-BDs.

I totally forgot that there was an establishing shot at the beginning.

I'm not a fan of revisionism and I would preferably watch the original version most of the time, but I can't say that I'm bothered by any of the changes in the Cowboy Bebop Remix version.

None of the changes stick out like a sore thumb to me, unlike the Star Wars SE or any surround remix with anachronistic foley work.

The steelbook is on its way, but it may still take a week or 2 before it arrives here. I'll post screenshots and specs if no one has posted them by then.

I have Human Crossing. I will look into it tomorrow. Based on their SD "capability" on display in Xabungle and VOTOMS, I will say it is likely just as borked.

ANYONE else willing to hit up Sentai's Tech Support? I don't think I can get them to change anything single-handedly.

Thank you. I'll send an email to them after you post about Human Crossing that way there's more evidence if that one is also messed up or not.
