[Show spoiler] Ignore the terrible 60fps interpolation. It’s the only one I could find on YouTube... Yeah, they are nice changes in my book. Plus, I think they’ll “uncensor” some bits. Not gonna say what, but it might be similar to what the SAO movie added for its Blu-ray release. Last edited by professorwho; 03-15-2019 at 11:12 AM. |

It's more than probably a technical issues with the US theater equipment or a not so great master given by Aniplex JP, because I have seen HF 2 in theater in France via Wakanim back in february, and there was no banding, or maybe a little but nothing too distracting, same as HF1..

Funi has wrong colors and slightly more noticable banding.

The color shift is very subtle, slightly brighter. I think some of the banding problems can be mitigated ever so slightly by dropping the brightness a smidge.
I also took screenshots with MPC-HC + madVR, but I noticed that there's some kind of forced image processing going on. The color banding is slightly reduced madVR v0.92.17 (latest version, image processing options disabled that interfere with the screenshots, such as debanding) ![]() Also in older version: madVR v0.92.2 (before introduction of overhauled screenshot functionality in v0.92.3) ![]() The DGAVCIndex and VirtualDub2 outputs are more or less identical to each other. Whatever color difference there is, it's extremely minor. I can't personally tell the difference no matter where I look in those screenshots.

I decided to take a look at the Tenchi Muyo! Mihoshi Special. Like the first two OVA series, this episode received a remaster from the original film elements and blows the DVD out of the water. However, while this episode was included on the fourth Japanese Blu-ray with the final episodes of OVA 2, Funimation didn't license and release this particular episode to include in their domestic set. It's quite a shame considering that this was always one of my favorites and marks the appearance of my favorite gal in the series.

If I remember correctly, it was previously mentioned the PQ for the collector's edition of Highschool of the Dead was an improvement over the standard 2011 release. Think it was Mangaranga who brought it to attention, tried searching for the post but couldn't find it, apologies if am mistaken.
Had a quick but closer look at it. While the CE PQ is improved in terms of brightness, color, and line detail it seems to have taken a couple of steps backwards with some increased banding and macroblocking. ![]() I'll be honest, I have no idea what to think. We all know at this point that Q-Tec is doing the upscale, but just based on this heavily compressed YouTube trailer it's something. Now, I'm sure that the macroblocking in the YT video won't be on the disc, nor will the banding, but judging based on that... it's not the worst thing I've ever seen. Now, I'm not defending it by any means, but Kare Kano was a weird show in production. Change in staff part way through, change in tone, and the implementation of digital effects and compositing make it a show that's really hard to pin down. As a result of the latter, it's 1080i, which is fine by me because sadly Gainax had lots of 30i panning shots, and I wouldn't want missing frames and stuff of that sort. Then again, a compressed YouTube video can hide a lot, so I'm going in optimistic. I may end up buying it because: 1. The US Nozomi release is censored 2. The JP DVDs are OOP and kinda rare/expensive 3. I don't have a Laserdisc player (yet), so I can't go that option |

I have Kare Kano JP on order. If you want to wait I could always get you some screen shots or something. Or rip 5 minutes or whatever you want.

The one I can't wait for is Devilman Lady. I preordered that from Amazon JP as soon as it hit. If I could order it and have it show up even quicker than normal Amazon JP express, I would do it.
Haven't seen any videos and can't really find any of what they've done for the remastering though, so it could be terrible. I hope not though. EDIT - Found out Devilman Lady is a new remaster on 2 BD25s from a, I believe the term is interpositive telecine? http://www.tc-ent.co.jp/products/detail/BFTD-0295 Last edited by slerch666; 03-18-2019 at 03:01 PM. |

OK, so I think I have everything you folks may be looking for when it comes to FMP IV JP vs US.
EDIT-This is unusual for FUNimation. It is on 2 BD50s and the episode split is 6/6 with the extras being loaded onto disc 2. It's apparent someone at FUNi is a FMP fan and apparently pushed for the best possible release. Too bad they don't care about the rest of their releases. My initial impression was, FUNi used the Japanese video files and muxxed the losslessly encoded Japanese and English tracks into it. The reason I say this is that I was having a hard time keeping track of which was which given video wise they look pretty much identical. The files match up on each disc as the first episode in the series. The Japanese version starts RIGHT at the first frame. FUNi's has a couple of black frames at the start but they are within only a hand full of frames difference. Forgive the one snow picture. I screwed up and grabbed one frame or so apart. Nothing fundamentally changes between the two though. Tried to grab places I would have expected FUNi Banding but actually didn't see any. The Screenshot comparisons: http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/132357 Bitrate View for the US BD: ![]() Bitrate View for JP BD: ![]() BDINFO US: [Show spoiler] BDINFO JP: [Show spoiler] If there is any more info you want that I missed, let me know. I think this is enough for me and really, flipping from one to the other in vdbub2 was annoying because they were so close to being the same. In screenshot comparison, I think I see a little bit more sharpness in the JP set but it might just be because, given what I paid for it, I WANT to see a difference. ![]() Last edited by slerch666; 03-19-2019 at 12:57 PM. |

Wow. They look nearly identical. The only difference I could spot was one minor bit of banding in the fourth shot on the bottom left, and even then, it's pretty minor.
#5 and 6 are broken, and I'm not sure how, but otherwise this is as good as you can get. Last edited by professorwho; 03-18-2019 at 09:04 PM. |

I just tried the comparison in Firefox, Chrome, and Edge (yeah, Edge, really lol) and shots 5 and 6 loaded just fine. Not sure what you are seeing. Or rather, not seeing. If you want the direct links to the imgur files I can PM them to you, no problem. I hate that they are so close to each other. I am glad to have the extra printed materials for the JP BD but not sure it is enough to justify the large differences in price. Whatever. I love FMP. No regrets! ![]() This gives me hope that Darling in the Franxx will have the same "problem" and be dang near perfect comparison. I don't feel so good about the other 2 titles I got. 2202 was renamed "Star Blazers" and Die Neue These is typical 9 / 3 split as well. Though if this is the way they treat the higher profile titles like Darling and FMP, it gives me hope for the future. Slightly. Hard to erase all the FUNi banding and compression issues... |

Oof... Wait, Yamato is a 9/3 split? Damn, that sucks. S1 was an even split if I remember correctly. Even averaged around 30 mbps too... Oh well...
As for the LOTGH remake... it's unfortunate, but seeing as I was never a huge fan of it (in comparison to the original), it's not going to enrage me, however, still unfortunate. |

I noticed the Japanese credits in screenshot #2. That's unusual for a Funimation release. Did they keep the Japanese credits for all episodes?
