Thanks for the FMP IV info.
Almost done with the first FMP and I love it, think I'll go ahead and order the next 3 sets (especially that special edition for FMP IV). |

Generally they leave them alone if it is a unique opening and then they will randomly English-ify them for episodes where the op/ed are the same throughout. I will watch more tomorrow and report back. |

I went ahead and took a look at the main Tenchi Muyo OVA episodes as well. The Funimation release has incorrect colors/brightness, but the compression seems better here than on Lodoss.

So the one I was interested in beyond FMP is Darling in the Franxx. And... I have to say the results are frighteningly similar to FMP IV... FUNi got their "stuff" together and put out something amazing.
The US BD follows the unfortunately typical 9/3 split here. I need to double check FMP. I think it was a different split, which might explain part of why it is so much more amazing then Darling... The part you all love, the comparison shots between JP and US BDs. I had high hopes with what they did with FMP. Apparently whoever did it has more love for FMP than they do Darling. ![]() Image 5 really says it all. Look at Zero Two's horn in the US version vs the JP version. Hooray for the JP release here. http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/132371 US BD Bitrate View: ![]() JP BD Bitrate View: ![]() US BD Info: [Show spoiler] JP BD Info: [Show spoiler] I am glad I have the Japanese BDs. In motion, hard to see any issues on the FUNi release but knowing there are issues is enough in some ways. It's not TERRIBLE but not amazing either. I can maybe do one for 2202 tomorrow as well if there is interest. I have the JP BDs on that one as well. |

9/3 can be fine though can't it? I mean SNAFU S1 and S2 are 9/3 splits and seems universally to be accepted as being excellent PQ-wise. Shirobako did the same for the Part II and even 12 episodes a disc for Part I to me and looked better then 95% of stuff. Feel like it's all on the encoder.

Funi has the tools to produce top-notch discs. They should have no problem doing 9/3 splits so it's really on the skill level of the people working on the discs. It's also on the higher ups in the company who don't care enough to bring different people in that can produce better work as this has been an ongoing problem for years. |

We all know 9/3 can be fine. I am guessing we could find something where it has high bit rates and it sucks.
I get that people are fallible but it takes a certain lack of care to churn out so many discs and not give a...lick of fudge... that some customers are vocally opposed to what a company defecates onto the market. Funimation has been terrible. For years. From poorly encoded DVDs using terrible multiple angles, to BDs with compression issues, terrible color (I cry watching Spice and Wolf S1... Then they got better for S2 and keep S1 looking terrible), and a myriad of others issues. While Sentai and Discotek pooh in their direction, running circles around them at every corner. I just wish someone could make them care. |

Want to know the really bad thing? FUNimation didn't have to upscale it in the first place, an HD-native master existed, they just couldn't be bothered to try and get it. https://fandompost.vbulletin.net/for...ge4#post114274 (See post above linked for context, note that Sensuifu's images don't work anymore because they were on ImageShack) And then on S2, they got HD masters but they screwed up the audio. https://fandompost.vbulletin.net/for...ge6#post119668 |

S&W S1 was so bad, I just went and ordered the Japanese BD set sight unseen. I knew there was no way it could look as bad or worse than the FUNi set and guess what... I was right. Such a horrible treatment of such a good show. I would write what I really want to say but my post would be deleted. They've gotten better but better, what, 10ish years of them being in the Anime on BD game at near full speed and they are acceptable still (think they hit the "acceptable" target in '14 or '15) but have not improved or improved so little as to be imperceptible. And they just.don't.care. Nothing no one here hasn't likely already posted or felt though. |

Which release did you order because there was a release for S1 and S2 that has rather interesting differences.

The regular opening animation has proper English translations. The ending credits, as is normal for FUNimation, ensures the English language production credits appear before everything else and they are all in English with English translations of the staff. Title cards in the opening of episodes are Japanese, not the transforming craziness ADV went with originally on their releases. Though it helps it is called Full Metal Panic with a katakana under card I guess, and Invisible Victory is the proper Japanese name as well. Episode titles for the first 3 episodes are Japanese. I didn't check the last 3 on the disc but I assume they follow the trend. Also in Japanese, unless it was originally in English (WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE as an example), are the upcoming episode previews. I mean, these are all just black with text on them anyway so... yay? I am definitely glad they left the presentation alone, it is just that the presentation is... ho hum at best. Interesting fact for those still reading. The .5 episodes, the episodes I assume they made because production was slow (I make an assumption this is why we got so many .5s for such a short series)... they are in HD. They are ALSO on the related disc, so 4.5 is on disc 1, etc. HD is NOT the way they are presented on the original Japanese releases. The Japanese releases are bonus DVDs so they are in SD on the Japanese release. US BD wins here, hands down. AND the op/ed are in JAPANESE on these .5 ep, so the original op/ed are intact. At least on 4.5 episode. I will check the others later today. Also in HD, though I don't know it really means much, are the location scouting and other related videos. On the Japanese releases, they were also on the DVDs as extra, so SD. I say it doesn't mean much because they aren't the highest DV quality to begin with. But still nice to use a better codec, higher bit rates and "HD." One thing I find... interesting. Not sure how many people are aware but there is an English language version of the opening song and also an English version of the closing. Both the JP and EN versions are performed by Yamada Tamaru. Some or all probably knew that. What I was finding interesting is that FUNi had the ability to, I assume, replace the Japanese op/ed song in the English dub with JUST this version of the track. They have, in fact, NOT replaced the properly set versions of the song and only used English where I believe it was also used in the original JP versions of the show. This also follows the Crunchyroll soundtrack/JP language version. No idea what FUNi did with the streaming dub and I don't care enough to try to find out. FMP is one of those series I want in pristine quality and as hard as it is to type it up, FUNi actually hit the target with this release. |

Please don't tell me there is a problem with this set. I will not be pleased to have to search out another copy of this show. I watched it on JP BD and it looked fine so... I'm hoping. Hesitantly going to look at the links now... Looking at the images, which set is which? I am hoping the right side is the complete box... Cause man if I have to track this down again... lol |

Screenshots Not a bad a release, but iirc it's brighter than the JP BD and it doesn't have the color matrix problem that plague many VIZ Media BDs.
