MadVR in JRiver does some really good on the fly fixes for things like dot crawl, etc when you really start digging. It definitely is not perfect but can make some older only-on-DVD stuff more watchable.
You can make an avisynth script with fake grain plugin and run the script in a media player.

GrainFactory3 + required plugins AddGrainC and MaskTools2

Code:
Loadplugin("C:\Program Files (x86)\AviSynth\plugins\x86\ffms2.dll")
Loadplugin("C:\Program Files (x86)\AviSynth\plugins\AddGrainC-1.7.1\win32\AddGrainC.dll")
Loadplugin("C:\Program Files (x86)\AviSynth\plugins\masktools2-v2.2.18\x86\masktools2.dll")
FFmpegSource2("D:\Video\backup\00002.m2ts", atrack=-1)
grainfactory3(g1str=30, g2str=30, g3str=30, g1size=2, g2size=2, g3size=2)
AddGrainC(1.25,1.25)
Original, without fake grain:

If you're getting into filtering I suggest starting with VapourSynth instead of AviSynth.

To anyone who has any of the Blu-ray versions of Horus: Prince of the Sun- how bad is it? It’s Toei, who keeps their stuff in poor shape, and it’s an upscale. I might get the Discotek release if it’s an improvement over the DVD, but I’ve heard poor things about the picture quality.

The Blu Ray is an upscale of the DVD that was an upscale of the Laserdisc.

Toei are terrible. They can’t seem to do anything right. (I’d list some examples, but there’s too many to list)

I must mention when they took advantage of Smore Entertainment having never released anime before and how they sent them Bobobo with subtitle scripts in pdf and Galaxy Express 999 with hard-coded subtitles, then Smore ended up releasing it all anyway cuz what was done was done.

Toei is horrific lmao

I was linked this on Twitter, and it's actually not an upscale. It's just been Q-Tec'd from a scan of an interpositive.

Anyone pick up Yamibou on blu yet? How’s it look? I’d like to hope the cause of the long delay would mean a better product but Media Blasters sure is a thing.

Bumping this (Paprika) because I'm curious too. I wouldn't mind upgrading my Sony copy if the UK is better, I need the definitive releases of Satoshi Kon's oeuvre.

Anyone gotten a chance to dive into Funi's Yamato 2202 part 1 release?

Searched the thread, but apologies if I missed it.

Looks like Manga's 2018 release (Blu only) is at 10 quid right now. Decent price.

If it hasn't been done, I can grab some info tomorrow. I haven't been around long enough in the thread to know if someone else bothered or not.

Got my copy of Please Twins! today.

I was going to compare to DVD but let's face it, we already know the quality is better. It wasn't TERRIBLE (for the time) on DVD but even a 1080i stream is much better than what we got there.

1080i. LPCM audio for English and Japanese. Decently high average bitrate. I would say this is just as good as the Please Teacher release. Would have been nice to get the 1080p footage from the JP BD but even interlaced, using a good player, it looks fantastic in motion.

Caps were all pulled from DISC 2. I was flipping between the two discs and figured, hey, Disc 2 quality will be same as Disc 1, so screen caps are further into the series.

Here are the screen shots:

BDInfo (says English for both tracks, I assure you Japanese IS there as LPCM)

Well, the authoring system automatically defaults each track description to English, so the compresssionist must’ve forgotten. Not a big deal.

But yeah, it looks good to my eyes!
