GitS 95, on the other hand, doesn't have any loss of detail due to being native 4K (not upscaled from sub-1080). There is DNR — of course, there will always be DNR to avoid scanner noise, unless it is scanned at 8K+ (don't want a case of digital noise like with Land Before Time or Live-Action Yamato) — but it only is heavy enough to reduce grain size to a more pleasant size without blurring out line art or matte painting detail (which is what makes the Blu-rays of Disney movies way too soft; it's like they used Level 3 DNR in Waifu2x).

My Oshii GitS collection is going to be such a mess. I have the DVD Special Edition of the first one, I'll probably get Funi's BD of the second one, and I want the JP UHD of the first one. I separate titles by format, so nothing is going to be together!

There's "one" English dub, but there are versions that use different takes in some scenes (UK unrated has more profanity).

Censored cut is based on old PG-13 home video release.

I know that Viz's InuYasha Movie BD set is considered to be pretty terrible, but I decided to create some comparisons of the first film to see how it stacks up against the DVD. It's much better overall. Also, it appears you see less on the top and bottom on the BD, but a bit more on the sides.

That, on the other hand, is too much DNR. It demonstrates what I mean about blurring out the line art and looking like the Level 3 DNR in Waifu2x. It shouldn't even need DNR; I'm pretty sure it's digipaint, so no grain or noise in the source.

It is digipaint, but I'm not sure if it's DNR at play here or poor upscaling, or even thin line art to begin with upscaled poorly. I wouldn't immediately say it's DNR'd, as I doubt it would be.

The film was composited at full 1920x1080p, so perhaps it's the result of a bad upscale?

And this is a 2018 production.

Does anyone know of a comprehensive list of Q-tec remasters? I want to know because I seek to avoid crappy anime upscales on blu-ray.

Furthermore, are there any anime upscales by different companies that look GOOD? (I.e. they don'y look like smeary, over-sharpened crap?)

I actually think it looks okay, but I have to ask: In your opinion to what extent may one go to make an SD anime look better than the original source but not worse to displease fans? Should it even be attempted?

As for how to best handle an SD anime? There's no correct answer, because there isn't one. It's a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation.

The best solution is to recomposite a series, but as the original files on 97% of those SD shows are gone, it's not possible.
