Obviously the older digipaint shows would have the genga scanned at higher than 480p (around 720p I'd guess), but there's a limitation- at what resolution was it scanned? For example, JC Staff scans their stuff at 144dpi (1600x900p) and composites at 1504x846p. Really weird. Source: In fact, everyone should go watch that. Very informative video! |

It's awesome seeing them use a PVM for colour reference!

Ah! I get it now. I've actually seen that video before. Furthermore, that PVM is rad. Thanks for the info.
If I may ask, what digital anime that you know of were recomposited for a blu-ray release? |

Kannagi: Shrine Maidens is another. Frustrating that Aniplex USA won't ever give us those Blu-rays, Bandai's DVDs have some bad banding during dark scenes.

Sadly, Kannagi uses the DVD version of Episode 2 because the bastard director Yamakan was pissed it was mostly animated on 1s(!) while his Episode 1 wasn't. Plus, it had actual lip-sync, unlike 97% of all TV anime.

Wow. Thanks for the info. If I was to produce an anime, I would hold on to the original digital files for dear life and export those to whatever resolution needed.
Furthermore, there comes a point when the exported video file takes up more hard disk space than the original files do, so saving the original files is important to me. |

My understanding is that the US Blu-ray has better compression than the JP Blu-ray, which may be where this confusion originates. Season one is a pretty standard QTEC upscale, though maybe slightly better than some of their worst efforts, but season two is native HD and looks great.

I dunno about the US DVDs, but you can find a complete set of the original Limited Edition R2J DVDs for 1500 - 2500 yen on Mandarake.
Kyonai.de has a comparison between the JP, US, US (LE broadcast order) and German DVDs. Click on the screenshots to see the comparison https://www.kyoani.de/414/bildqualit...ffentlichungen The US DVDs compare favorably to the JP DVD, but some parts show more artifacting on the US DVD. JP DVD appears to have been filtered somewhat in some parts, perhaps to make compression easier. JP DVD also has lossless audio. The one thing that I don't like about the US DVDs are the fugly subtitles (screenshots from Crunchyroll forum) ![]() ![]() |

I received Sentai's BDs of Negima! and Negima!? today and decided to take a look at them.
First up is Negima! All I can say about this is even considering all the issues with Funi's DVD, the upscale on Sentai's BD sure isn't very pretty. Bitrate analysis for episode one: ![]() Screenshot comparisons: http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/803/ (I captured the wrong frames for shots 2 and 4. My bad.) My reaction: why did I even bother? lol Bitrate analysis for episode one: ![]() Screenshot comparisons: http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/811/ Backup gallery: https://imgur.com/a/xGod3IE |
