I'm usually not a fan of filters etc. but some of this stuff when it works really well is almost black magic. Though you would really need a well-trained network specifically for the thing you're trying to do, otherwise the risk for weird interpretations/results popping up is quite high, and the effort needed to fix all those errors after the fact would no doubt make the whole venture pointless.

I can imagine video adding another dimension of complexity, that you might need some kind of temporal component, simply because just upscaling every frame separately could lead to jitter.

I had to sneak a peek at the new remaster as well a while back, and unfortunately it's not quite as good as I would have hoped. It's very obviously de-grained, there's sharpening going on and edges can look a bit frayed or noisy, because while a lot of the grain is gone, the frame-to-frame unevenness effect it's had on the edges is not. It's not bad or anything, resolution is hugely improved and they've fixed a lot of jitter from the previous master, but in terms of film look it's pretty far from something like the Rumiko Takahashi shows for example.

A member of AL said the gamma/brighntess issue is still not fixed at the moment, so maybe that release also have a wrong color level (like the Code Geass movies, Amachu, etc.)
Like Amanchu and Code Geass, it's once again incorrect.

I just created a few screenshot comparisons for Silver Spoon. Even with the wrong gamma/brightness, these BDs are a godsend. I'm so glad I can unload my AoA DVDs.

Out of all those releases by Anime Limited that uses those encoders and/or authorers (who have yet to be identified), only Amanchu has the subtitles unlocked during playback (March Comes in Like a Lion doesn't count as while the same team was involved with the release, it is a clone of the Aniplex release, if I'm correct).

Can anyone tell me how good/bad the US or UK Made in Abyss release is? Went through the whole 200 pages and only saw mention of the German one being bad.

Also, I'm wanting to buy Hellsing Ultimate and both the US and Jap have new compilations out. I was just going to go with the Jap one since they're generally higher quality, and it has the dub, but I noticed it actually has one less disc than the Funi release. Can anyone give me insight on the quality of either of these releases?

Hellsing Ultimate from FUNi is a weird release. Set 1 has Episodes 1-4 on a single disc, then a disc of extras, Set 2 is the same, and Set 3 has everything on one disc, so it's really just 3 discs from FUNi, and their PQ ain't great. So, yeah, the Japanese release should be way better.

As for Made in Abyss... I haven't seen anything about the US and UK BDs (they are the same discs, I know that), so if anyone here can post stats and screencaps, that would be much appreciated.

There's no reason to think that a recent Sentai release, like Made in Abyss, would be bad.

I'd say probably very similar to TMS' other UHDs...which isn't a good thing. The remaster was already fairly grain-managed to begin with.

Check out this footage from the grain-free Lupin the Third: The Mystery of Mamo UHD disc and you'll probably get a sense of what to expect.

Not PQ related but the subs on Madman release for Violet Evergarden are the same as Netflix.
Aka : Trash.

Shooo... I can see banding on all of them, but I think that Dutch Blu-ray has the worst, especially in caps one and five. Something is definitely off about the colors, too. How the hell did that piece of crap make it past quality control?

Yeah, I watched the whole damn thing and I want my money back. It's nearly unwatchable sometimes. Banding, compression artifacts, wrong gamma level, green tint smh. Basically everything that could go wrong went wrong.

Here are some screenshots that aren't on caps-a-holic:

Apparently I’ve heard most Dutch BDs are badly encoded- is there any truth to that? Not just anime, but live action films, too.

Not counting Dybex/Kazé releases, there aren't a lot of Dutch anime releases. But as far as live action goes, there are many mediocre/bad releases. Those movies are just usually the smaller movies that don't get picked up by the big studios, so no big loss often.

The Snowpiercer Blu-ray was really fugly. I bought it for like €5, took screenshots and then said NOPE. Haven't watched it yet and I don't think I will.

Aoutch, that Broly release is just awful, did you consider a refund for that crap?
It's maybe even worse than the french release of Re-zero (the worst in the world for that serie, and probably one of the worst PQ release ever)

I opened the item and watched the whole movie already, so I don't think I can send it back. Maybe I'll sell it, but it feels bad to inflict the pain of a bad Blu-ray to someone.

lol. The only negative review on Dutch webshop Bol.com is being downvoted. Maybe done by Periscoop Film lol.
