It's a shame that the UK packaging (the double play and green re-issue) sticks out like a sore thumb when displayed together with the Korean sets.

I'm thinking buying the Japanese Limited Edition DVD set and putting the BD inside. It's pretty cheap nowadays, less than 1000 yen.

There's also the Japanese SAC Trilogy set, but IDGAF about the compilation movies and I can't stand those banana boomerangs.

Orphen just arrived today, and it looks like Sentai just literally dumped the DVD masters on Blu-ray. The audio is loseless, but MPEG2 is used for video, and the video quality doesn't seem much better than DVD.

They did the same thing with the Sakura Wars SD-BD. They're recycling DVD encodes now which is lazy and not quality focused.

Why even bother doing lossless audio at that rate?

I noticed that lately they've been putting more per disc than before, so that's why... ugh.

I don't own any SDBDs yet, but based on what I know, they're possibly using more bitrate than necessary. Kino's Journey is 11.9 mbps which is probably overkill. Encoding using AVC/H.264, you can encode at around 5-8 mbps and get results on par if not better. It's 480i or 480p, so there's only so much resolution in the image. Unless it's something insanely visually demanding like Gankutsuou, anything above 10 mbps is overkill.

I'm no audiophile, nor well versed with audio, so lossy audio is still fine by me as long as it isn't too compressed. Obviously lossless audio is preferable, but I can't hear much of a difference, so it's not necessary to make a good sounding disc. Dolby Digital at 224 kbps or higher is good enough, and if you can get away with lower- even better.

I think Yumeiro Patissiere will be my first SDBD from them. I have always wanted to see it and I like cooking/shoujo stuff so it seems fun lol

I would gladly take lossy audio with a quality video encode like what Justin does for Discotek's SD-BDs. Lossless audio with old DVD encodes doesn't make sense.

They need to stop completely with re-using MPEG-2 encodes. New encodes with AVC, it's not hard. I'm frustrated with them and their inability to get these right, first the field blend error which ruined quite a few discs I would've liked to own and now this.

I asked them if they fixed the frame rate issue, and they said they did on later releases. I'm not sure if they really did...

I take no issue with them having lossless audio, as it doesn't take up too much space, but I think they should just focus on the video. When I was talking about the bitrate, it really doesn't matter in the end how high or low it is, as long as it is in AVC and doesn't have the frame blending. It could be 5 mbps or 15 mbps, it doesn't matter as long as the key essentials are down.

Just by comparing to my DVD set the SD-BD of Sakura Wars does seem to look like its still encoded wrong. They're still using the same composite source as the DVD though which looks ugly and has dot crawl.

I'm not even sure how Sentai managed to fix the framerate issues in their Sakura Wars SDBD and still pull out an image that is inferior to previous DVD releases. What is with all the pixelation/aliasing artifacts?

It looks like they encoded the video file in half the scan rate; 480i60 to 240p30.

Simply braindead.

Watching the Over the Rainbow Blu-ray, it bothered me that none of the songs were translated in the subtitles. Are all the Japanese Sunshine Blu-rays like this? I also have the JP Blu-ray for the movie from the first series and all songs are translated on that disc.

The TV singles would've used the subtitles from CR which had translated songs.
I too was confused that they're not translated here for the movie, although I've read that the overall translation for the movie is pretty poor anyway.

I just watched my Space Battleship Yamato 2199 bluray. It looks pretty good to me for a Funimation release.

I might have to double-dip whenever Funi puts it out. I feel like the movie lost a lot of its impact on me just because I couldn't understand any of the lyrics.
