I don't want to sound pushy, but can you please split 10 to 20 seconds of video (without audio) and PM it? I'm kinda curious in how it looks in motion.

Huh. It's weird. Some shots look nearly identical, while others show that the FUNi release had some DNR applied, and some show poor compression on the grain. The interlacing is bad, though. It really has no reason to be interlaced at all.

Watched the clip Shoe sent and wow the interlacing is terrible. This really really needed to have a progressive encode.

I checked the footage and the reason why we're seeing the interlacing here is because the screenshots were taken without inverse telecine (IVTC). If you watch the FUNi BD on a good Blu-ray player or a PC media player that can do IVTC, then it should remove the 2:3 pulldown.

Still, that doesn't excuse Funi or anything. They were willing to IVTC Cowboy Bebop (and ruin the 30p & 60i footage), but not willing to IVTC this. Jeez.

Seems a bit of a strange choice to go with 1080i for it. Considering how long they've sat on the show and the low sales numbers they're probably predicting, I wonder if they used some old HDTV masters they still have from when it aired or something.

They likely only acquired home video rights recently, so I still wonder what happened here. It wasn't standard practice in 2010 for home video rights to be bundled with streaming, they had to be acquired separately.

Are the Australian and UK releases of Durarara x2 the same? I know very little about the region B releases aside from hearing something about missing extras and borked audio.

The UK release of Part 1 of X2 is different and better, as it’s a Justin Sevakis encode. Then Anime Limited decided to cheapen out and use the AU releases which have lossy audio at a lower bitrate than even their DVDs.

Also, they’re missing the OVA episodes.

I then got to the last disc, and it started doing FUNi things

I don't know if it's both banding and mosquito noise from poor encoding, but it's definitely banding, doing some shit I've never seen before. There were two instances in episode 23 of banding the likes of which I'd never seen before, with one being particularly bizarre.

Overall, it's still a good-looking release, and three weird eps is, after all, just three eps, but FUNi gonna FUNi

I wonder when 2160p anime shows start airing or be put on bluray for home media purposes.... I remember seeing a copy of some TV show completely in a 2160p 16:9 box....and thought wow, this is new...well at least 4K UHD bluray isn't going home anytime soon....you know with streaming services now kicking in trying to contend against home media physical releases....

Most anime still aren't even being animated at 1080P, they're animated at least in 720P then upscaled to 1080P. I don't see the industry really adopting 4K UHD very much given how hectic the production process is (episodes being delivered to TV stations mere hours before airing (this happened with Kill la Kill's final episode)-that's how tight deadlines get) and declining sales in Japan. Blu-ray releases for anime didn't even start to become common until around 2010 or so, though some stuff was available before that, as early as 2006.
http://www.allcinema.net/prog/show_d...num_sid=484563

At this point in time, there's like only 10-20 or so anime that have 4K releases in Japan (and they're like all movies/OVAs IIRC), and North America is only finally getting its first, the Space Adventure Cobra movie (a cel-animated production), in November.

Just to note, IIRC, this was a restriction from Aniplex Japan. Only Aniplex USA is allowed to have those OVAs, no one else in any English-speaking area.
