I should say I bought the Dynit to match my IT copy of Part 1. But really, the main reason I went Dynit was because the timing was the same, and the PQ would be at least on-par with the JP BD. The debanding is just an extra, really. It's a JP quality release at half price (but slightly better in terms of video, but not by a huge bit).

Lupin The Third (1971) - Yamato Video BD (Italy) vs Netflix Japan
Comparison 1 – focus on “frozen” grain and dnr Code:

Other changes are the boosted colors, of which I'm not a fan of, and the image stabilization recognizable by the zoomed in picture. This is sadly one of those rare instances where the streaming experience is superior (Discotek Media, I beg you). [Show spoiler] What is with this franchise having good HD masters, on disc that is, for the lessor entries (the post-Cagliostro films, most of the cel-done specials, etc) and the ones that people want are...shite. Hopefully, Discotek can get that Netflix master for a potential Part 1 Blu. Last edited by Dailyan; 01-12-2020 at 05:46 PM. |

The frozen grain on the first Lupin III TV series bothered me a lot when I was watching Discotek's R1 DVD release, and I wasn't aware that Netflix Japan had access to unfiltered masters that kept the film grain intact and had more organic-looking colors. Hell, even their cropping is better because they didn't bother fixing the frame jittering. I'd love to own a BD release of this show that looked like that.

Screenshot comparison of the second half of episode 17. Second half of ep 17 was sourced from film elements of lower quality than other episodes, and these were then processed to death in the BD version.

March Comes in Like a Lion 3月のライオン Sangatsu no Lion
(Anime Limited, UK) ![]() Disc 1 Bitrate Japanese LPCM 2.0 (48kHz, 24-bit) English LPCM 2.0 (48kHz, 24-bit) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Sangatsu no Lion is beautiful. On an artistic level, like most Shaft works, the cinematography is stunning. The framing and composition are perfect for the series, and the editing of sound and visual is too good. That said, image quality is not 100% perfect. There is some source banding and aliasing, but most of it is very minor, and cannot be seen in motion. Some shots look worse than others, but I doubt anyone will consider it terrible or unwatchable. I'm 98% certain this is a clone of the AoA release, just re-authored to Region B, and with an All The Anime logo before the menu. So yes, this is Region B locked- however, take note that- for some reason- the All The Anime logo is presented in PAL 25 fps. Even if you have a Region Free player and can play Region B titles, please make sure your TV can display PAL frame rates, or your player can convert it to NTSC frame rates (my player does the later). The Japanese LPCM 2.0 track is flawless. That said, much of the sound design relies on silence, for visual storytelling, so there aren't many stand out moments audibly- though I don't have a surround system, perhaps decoding it to upmix into surrounds may provide an engrossing experience. That said, when there is sound, and even when there isn't, no audible compression is in the mix. The English translation is very good, which is strange, considering Aniplex's track record. Perhaps the minimal amount of dialogue in the series helped the overall quality. I 100% recommend Sangatsu. It's possibly my anime of the 2010-2019 decade- up there with Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu, Kill la Kill, Oregairu 2 and a few others. It's also one of the most depressing anime I've seen, with intense drama that will surely make you tear up at least once in its 44 episode run. |

Another Lupin comparison, this time also with the French Black Box BD screenshots from the Anime-HD.fr review
Code:
https://slow.pics/c/dOddCbWn I'm never touching a Yamato Video product again. Not that the Black Box BD is great because of the frozen grain nonsense in the master, but holy crap at all the processing in the Yamato Video BD. And they also based their subs on English fansubs that are apparently fixed-up versions of HK bootleg DVD subs. SMH. |

Cells can't be a clone. Aniplex's BD is 3 discs whereas the AUS/UK release is 2 discs.
I also got my copy of AnoHana in today and it's anything but a clone of the Aniplex release. It's on 2 BD25s @~3.6gb an episode with incorrect gamma and no chapter markers for the OP/EDs. Yay. EDIT: Having checked the AoA BDMV size it appears all the episodes are all but exactly half the size of their Aniplex equivalents. Bitrate of episode 1 is just under 18mbps.
