From what I understand, the disc in Eleven Art's limited edition of Maquia: When The Promised Flower Blooms Limited Edition is superior to the initial Shout Factory release. Would anyone happen to have further details about this?

The original Shout Factory release has the film on disc twice, once for each audio track option, and the Japanese track has the subtitles burned directly into the picture. It's a very odd release. The LE version has conventional player-generated subtitles like every other anime titles does.

Also, the colors (especially the reds) don't look right in the hardsubbed version of the movie that's present in the standard release. The LE is better in every way.

Did A Silent Voice suffer from the same problems as the Euphonium movies Eleven Arts got? I never did check the Nozomi BD to see what the differences were since Maquia was super different.

EDIT: To give some extra context to what it is we're looking at here. These are waveform monitors. They chart the luminance levels and give us reading on how many nits something might be pumping. Don't pay attention to the screenshots too much as they have to be downconverted to SDR, sRGB, yadda, yadda, yadda. The monitors on the sides are what you should be looking at, as they will give a correct reading of the HDR content.

Personally, I feel that Lionsgate went out of their way to make this look flashy, while the Bandai-Visual took a restrained approach trying to match what the film would have looked like in 1995. My preference is more to being faithful to way the film was, but feel free to disagree.

There are also scenes that are supposed to be Standard Definition(which mean SDR too) and they got pumped too.

Weird, I think I actually prefer the look of the US BD over the JP and US UHDs, out of curiosity would you be able to add some comparison shots of the JP BD as well? I heard the US BD had black bars around the edges for some reason so depending on what the JP BD looks like I may decide to go with that one over the US one.

Oof... That color banding in the Nozomi BD!

The deband filter in MPV helps with cleaning up the picture, as long as a lower threshold value than the default value is used. The default value 64 destroys too much detail.

MPV deband with threshold value reduced to 32

MPV deband with default threshold value of 64

Having watched OVA #1 to #5 now, I have to say the banding didn't stood out to me that very often. While I notice the banding, it's often not a super distracting eyesore in part due to the motion, the banding lurking mainly in darker gradients and the presence of some noise. OVA #1 is the worst offender so far. The worst bits in #2-#5 don't seem to be as bad as those in #1.

Still, I would recommend buying used copies of the JP BD instead because the difference in price with the new price US/UK BD is small. I regret not checking the second hand market.

Do you by any chance know which BD the Korean release uses? I'm assuming it's the JP BD but I can't seem to find out which disc IVE Entertainment used for the Lenticular/Scanovo release.

From what I can tell the US and JP BDs look about the same visually, but I just read that the US BD was missing a sound effect or two in places, does anyone know if they're also missing in the English dub featured on the JP BD or not? I think I saw someone saying that some of the detail was lost in darker shots of the US BD, but I'm not 100% on that one.

Funimation Acquires Violet Evergarden TV Series Home Video, Limited Edition Announced
https://www.funimation.com/blog/2020...&sf128590411=1

Been waiting for an English release of this series forever, I didn't think it would ever leave Netflix so I'm definitely picking this up. Has Funimations video quality been any better lately, I feel like everything they put out is all over the place?

Hell yes! I better pre-order the LE for this one. Pretty sure it'll sell out. Everybody has been waiting for this.
