Also have to consider eyesight. My eyes are not as good as they used to be and at a typical distance on my 40" tv I wouldnt be able to spot minor differences. Color banding does bug me tho and its the easiest for me to spot. Could be worse I suppose like cable/sat tv.

Speaking of text, that's where I noticed most of the edge sharpening in Railgun - some signs, titles, etc. have a weird looking halo surrounding them which is a telltale artifact of artificial sharpening. I noticed it around some objects too such as windmills and houses but to a lesser degree. Quote:
Not to get off topic too much but I've seen many of the latest BD releases such as Sicario, and Last Witch Hunter to name a few. While both exhibit pretty nice looking PQ overall, the reviews that I've read here and elsewhere all fail to mention some of the cons that I noticed. Sicario has some nasty and noticeable compression blocking going on in a few of its night time scenes. And Last Witch Hunter has some very ugly banding in a few of its fight scenes. Am planning to pick up the UHD disc for both and am curious to see if the problems carry over to that version. |

Wait, Hollywood manages to screw up Blu-rays of recently released movies in this day and age? And banding in live-action, that's something I haven't heard of too much. Care to show an example? I currently don't have much of a movie collection (Hoping to fix that eventually as I do watch lots of movies). And huh, both of those you mentioned are Lionsgate.
As for what my eyes can spot, I'm generally pretty good at spotting banding, artifacting, dot crawl, rainbows, sometimes aliasing (depends on how severe), macroblocking, and sometimes posterization, though I'm able to stomach some of it due to having watched streaming anime for so long (And sometimes can't spot things due to not paying enough attention to it while watching), though some of these issues can be absolute suffering (Exhibits A, B, and C). Compression artifacts, halos, and ringing are things I'm not too good at spotting. |

I haven't ripped the BD for Last Witch Hunter yet so no screencaps of the banding but I can describe it. During the bar fight, around the time it catches fire, you can see some really ugly banding. I don't remember the exact timestamp though. Sicario - look at the top middle half of the screen, and along the left hand edge as well, it's bathed in compression blocking - ![]() ![]() The worst of the absolute worst has to go to Mokingjay 1 though. The movie runs for two hours and was only given around 16 GB of data for its video. Just terrible. Compression blocking is a major issue and can be seen everywhere. Posterization is also an issue and banding makes an appearance several times, as well. Here are a few examples of the most noticeable instances of the banding - ![]() ![]() |

What the....? They couldn't treat even Mockingjay right? Lionsgate isn't exactly a super big studio like say Warner Bros. or Universal, but they can't treat their biggest franchise, Hunger Games right? Did they get at least Catching Fire right, the biggest in the franchise by far?
Also huh, I'm able to spot the compression blocking way easier here, guess it's easier for me to spot in live-action as opposed to animation. |

Catching Fire fares better - higher bitrate and less banding and blocking but... the picture is still on the poor side. It still contains banding, and it is still data starved at almost two and a half hours in length, they only gave the video around 22 GB. Not enough and it shows, there are a lot of compressed looking moments. Here's a quick look at some of the banding and blocking -

Since it got released, can I get some screencaps of the Pokémon Movies 1-3 steelbook? I want to get it for The Power of One and Mystery of the Unown, but the Pokémon movies have never had good US masters and I need to know if they've been updated to the Japanese restorations or not (you can tell if Mewtwo Strikes Back is restored because aside from much better video, Machamp doesn't come out of his Pokéball twice and Squirtle's Bubble attack is CG).

As for Mockingjay Pt. 1, fortunately the Japanese release from Sony is much better than Lionsgate's in terms of banding. Sony is going to re-release a single-disc discounted version of it on March 23rd for Ľ1500 (as the initial JP releases had two and three BDs, with the third disc being more Japan-centric), so the most cost-effective thing to do is keep the US release for the sake of bonus features and get this JP version for the PQ. ![]() Last edited by svenge; 02-13-2016 at 02:58 AM. |

Pretty sure it was 1080i. The upcoming anniversary SD Blu-Ray is 480i too.
