Are there any notable differences between Funimation's 2013 blu-ray release of Akira and the 2017 steelbook release? I seem to recall that they aren't the same disc but I can't remember what the differences were.

Definitely, if it turns out to not have HDR, they are going to have some unhappy customers.

Same. Discs. Save for a handful exceptions (you can find them at the bottom here) FUNimation doesn't make new discs.

You're probably thinking about the Bandai Visual Blu-ray vs. the FUNimation Blu-ray where while FUNimation had the inferior audio, it had better video quality, had more film grain, and got rid of the windowboxing. It also had actual subtitles as opposed to dubtitles. The regular Blu-ray included with the upcoming (botched) 4K release should be new, but also inferior.

No Japanese LPCM 2.0 track on the FUNimation. Only the awful 5.1 “hypersonic” revisionist trash. So there’s no 100% perfect Akira release at all unless one buys multiple releases and combines them together into one.

I'm referring to 1080p copies. In no way would the UHD even be considered in the running.

Any word yet on how the new disc for Sentai's Garden of Words blu-ray re-release looks?

It looks good to my untrained eye.

But I can say that they came up with a novel approach for adding the commentary track as lossless audio. Because the film is so short, they've given the commentary its own separate title on disc, which means it doesn't take up any extra bitrate for the main feature.

Good to know! Though I'm also waiting for folks to do comparisons between discs so I can determine if upgrading is worthy or not, like what happened with Children Who Chase Lost Voices.

And now Geoff says the Akira 4K looks... good? Unusual turn of events, that's for sure. Maybe it's not as bad as the screencaps made it look...

Professorwho--do you have a list of MediaOCD encodes that are not Discotek releases? I know Mr. Sevakis did some work for NISA, Anime Ltd. and Viz. You can PM me if posting it publicly is not allowed.

I'm not professorwho, but I do know where a good amount are listed, Justin's ANN encyclopedia page. Justin entered much of this himself, mainly the stuff when he wasn't being credited on the actual release, though that's only some, not all.

^ Yes, except for the movie standard edition which is port of Funi disc. Ultimate Edition movie disc is by MediaOCD.

Some titles that are not credited on ANN:

- Mobile Suit Gundam The Origin I - IV (Anime Limited)
- The Tatami Galaxy (Anime Limited)
- Persona 3 films (Anime Limited)
- A Silent Voice (Anime Limited)

iirc he's only credited in Gundam The Origin I - IV in one of the menus.

He also authored the Blu-ray of Outlaw Star for Anime Limited, but he didn't do the compression because it is a remux of JP BD.

LE seems to use Funi disc for the movie since it is a repack of the standard editions.

Mobile Suit Gundam V - VI - Nozomi BD vs Anime Limited UK/FR BD

Mostly screenshots of darker shots to show the better compression in the US BD. The US BD is still not quite on the same level as Justin Sevakis' work on the UK/FR BD of I-IV when comparing the footage in IV to the recap in V, but it is good enough for me (considering that the superior alternative is much more expensive). It's too bad that Anime Limited didn't use Justin for V-VI.
