I have no idea really, but I know I'm right when I say: Standard FUNi mediocrity.

From what I recall of the Mania thread which is unfortunately gone, people didn't think FUNi's BD's were good, especially with how no BD's for the show exist in Japan. It was considered another not so good FUNi upscale.

Joy, the latest in lazy smeary DNR upscales from Japan, and worst of all, it's on yet another cel-animated show, the list grows...

[Late edit]I misread and this is actually a remaster, that makes things even worse. How do you remaster something like this?

So, this isn't a recent release (nor even a Blu) but since I recently got two more versions of it I figured I'd compare their quality differences on the first episode.

Tsukihime
Japanese 6 DVD set vs US Geneon 3 DVD set vs US Sentai 2 DVD set (original release)

Japanese 6 DVD set
Video: MPEG2 7694 Kbps (1.30 GiB total)
Japanese Audio: LPCM 16 bit 48 KHz 1536 Kbps (266 MiB total)
English Audio: None
English Subtitles: None

Geneon 3 DVD set
Video: MPEG2 4477 Kbps (775 MiB total)
Japanese Audio: AC3 (Dolby) 2.0 192 Kbps (33.2 MiB total)
English Audio: AC3 (Dolby) 2.0 192 Kbps (33.2 MiB total)
English Subtitles: Full and Signs and Songs

Sentai 2 DVD set
Video: MPEG2 4935 Kbps (853 MiB total)
Japanese Audio: AC3 (Dolby) 2.0 224 Kbps (38.7 MiB total)
English Audio: AC3 (Dolby) 2.0 224 Kbps (38.7 MiB total)
English Subtitles: Full and Signs and Songs

Best Video: Japanese DVDs
Best Japanese Audio: Japanese DVDs
Best English Audio: Sentai DVDs
(Above based on raw stats only, have not done eye or ear comparisons)

I should have spent money on a Japanese DVD set instead of the Geneon box

If you could, could you like throw up comparisons on like Screenshotcomparison? I'm curious how they stack up. Geneon back in the day was generally the best at DVD's, so I wonder where it'd rank.

So I was discussing the failure that is The Future Diary UK Blu-ray from baka Kaze on AUKN and after folks mentioning Sentai and their 1 disc releases, I'm curious to know how the discs turned out the following shows (heck all 1 disc titles to be honest):
- Is the Order a Rabbit?
- Kinmoza
- My Mental Choices... (NouCome) ~ this is a 10 episode show btw
- Shirobako
- Yuyushiki

From what I read on this thread it sounded like Haikyu!! Collection 2 turned out alright so that's something.

The Sentai 1-discers I've seen haven't been terrible. Nothing like that cursed Zvezda release.

EDIT: Had a look through that thread you linked to. That Buzz character sure seems nice

Dammit I'm so upset, the Amazon listings gave off the implication that this might be a really good release (I think I recall it saying each set was either 2 or 3 discs. I figured that was unlikely but was hopeful). Obviously I took it with a grain of salt because Kaze but it still sucks.

I second Kinmoza and Yuyushiki, though I'd imagine since both series favor brighter pallettes, it shouldn't be too bad. On that note, I hear Shirobako turned out okay, though I haven't seen physical proof.

Only one i own from that list is My Mental Choices... (NouCome) and it has 11 episodes, 10 + the OVA

This is what MakeMKV shows me. Don't have BDinfo as that doesn't run on OS X

Psycho-Pass 2 Screencaps via Sensuifu of The Fandom Post.

I didn't look at all the caps closely, but this already looks a lot better than S1, very severe banding isn't as much of a problem here. Shame S2 had to get the better video quality, it was an absolutely atrocious show, easily one of the worst anime of 2014.

I'm really holding out for at least a passable release of Season 1 Extended Edition. It's looking unlikely that FUNi will be doing Extended but it's their chance to make up for S1.

Ditto. Well, I wouldn't call it horrible. But season 1 was definitely better.

My solution was to buy Season 1 and then just watch fanrips made from the Japanese BDs. Same with Steins;Gate, and Serial Experiments Lain...

Gee, I'm sensing a trend here.

Man, remember when it was Sentai who were the popular target?

I really feel bad for FUNimation, their quality assurance ain't what it used to be.

Sentai isn't as much of a target because people don't discuss video quality on their releases that much anymore, sadly, though the super problematic releases like Penguindrum, Kids on the Slope (dat audio issue), Colorful, and Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere seemingly no longer happen. This is like the only place I go to that regularly discusses video quality on releases. Though if you look through this thread, you'll find a good number of problematic Sentai encodes.

I really wish FUNi would stop translating the opening and ending credits if they aren't going to put any effort into replicating the visual effects. The second opening of the first season looks awful on FUNi's release compared to the Japanese.
