After a quick check, it seems it was corrected at some point during the first half of the series (ep. #2 is affected as well, eps. #11 & #19 for instance, are not).

Has anyone ever done a comparison between the DVD and BD releases of the Read or Die OVA? I was curious if there was a massive difference in terms of quality. While it would be nice to get the BD, unless it gets a reprint someday I'd probably be better off just settling for the DVD considering the prices that the BD set goes for. With that said, outside of the cover art is there any sort of difference between the standard DVD release and "The Essence of Anime" one?

Manga's The Essence of Anime DVDs were literally just the old DVD with a slipcover added to them, though there might have been minor changes with what insert(s) were included. The Appleseed OVA included a UMD of Ghost in the Shell for some reason (which is also dub-only unlike other anime UMDs), and it's not advertised anywhere on the packaging, so there were things like that.

Anyway, I don't know how the BD compared to the DVD for the OVA, but I do know that the Geneon DVDs compared pretty favorably for the TV series, sadly those comparisons are lost because Mania shutdown. The Blu-rays are missing the English commentary tracks and the art gallaries from the TV series DVDs.

Read or Die: TV on DVD also has 5.1 tracks - where as the Blu Ray has 2.0.

But is it a real 5.1 track or just some cheap upmix of the 2.0 track? There are hundreds of those terrible upmixes that were done during the DVD era because 5.1 was considered cool. Usually the Blu-Ray editions drop them because they just don't bring anything new that the 2.0 didn't offer.

It’s an upmix ,but it was one of the better ones . I remember a lot of people complaining about Aniplex not including it thinking the show was originally 5.1 .

To me the OVA while it’s better then the Manga DVD release was still disappointing looking ,but I’m thinking that might be inherent to the source of it .

I already posted screenshots from Funimation BD, but this time I have Kadokawa and Dybex BD footage that was provided by doud.

Dybex BD is filtered, sharpened and deinterlaced to 29.97p. I'm not a fan of the processing myself. The bitrate of Dybex BD also differs greatly per episode. As a consequence, the opening of episode #8 has more artifacting than in the higher bitrate episode #2

Left: #2 / Right #8

Funimation BD has a blurrier shifted chroma, but it's fortunately almost unnoticeable unlike Funimation's Yamato 2199.

Funimation BD: original / luma / blueness / redness

Kadokawa BD: original / luma / blueness / redness

It's getting an English subtitled Taiwanese Blu-ray next month btw.

That's from the first release. Anime Limited BD is a copy of the vastly superior Sentai Selects re-release.

Any idea how it compares to the $80 JP box set version? It's been on my import list...

Paranoia Agent - Selecta Visión BD

I tried to match NLScavenger's screenshots of episode #1 from a couple of posts above. Let this be a warning for anyone interested in buying any BD by Selecta Visión. As i've mentioned before, not only is the brightness wrong, but it's also deinterlaced to 1080p 23.976 FPS. So yeah, avoid this release.

Repost from the CR x Viz thread, as evidently I got a bit too into expressing my concerns with Viz distributing their titles.

Quote:
There is also the major concern which is video quality, and unfortunately (excluding the titles Justin did for them) Viz don't have the best track record in this regard. First they were encoding for PC RGB levels with trash encoding, then around 2016 they were encoding in the SD colour space but their encoding was much better. Jojo Golden Wind Part 2 finally saw a respectable release from them encoded in the correct colour range and correct RGB levels (albeit not free from issues as their encoder will every so often spit out anything from an average of one to a few frames showing some blocking and worse encoding which also affects prior releases - Potential spoiler warning for second image comparison).

That brings us to now, where a month and a half after Jojo's authoring, someone (who I assume isn't Subatomic due to the disc structure/encoding setup) authored Osomatsu-san - which once again has been encoded for PC RGB levels and thus has heightened gamma. I can't really speak for the encoding of the episodes themselves as Osomatsu-san as a show is both low resolution and incredibly noisy, but the trailers on the discs looked atrocious compared to their Subatomic Digital authored counterparts which causes me a lot of worry for future releases.

Extra posts from my Twitter on Osomatsu.

Quote:
Okay, that's definitely not the case as the trailers also have incorrect gamma and significantly worse encoding. Very worrying. https://slow.pics/c/zysSdhsH

Not pictured - the ridiculous amount of accompanying banding and blocking.
Quote:
I'm starting to get the impression that Subatomic Digital didn't author this disc. It doesn't follow their usual disc structure, the disc lockout is set up differently and the audio is 24bit DTS HD-MA - whereas Subatomic have always done 16bit.
Despite this I still wholeheartedly recommend the Osomatsu discs, if nothing else for the dub and lack of any releases online past Season 1.

Dybex BD

Dybex BD is filtered, sharpened and deinterlaced to 29.97p. I'm not a fan of the processing myself. The bitrate of Dybex BD also differs greatly per episode. As a consequence, the opening of episode #8 has more artifacting than in the higher bitrate episode #2
Weird, the Media-Info I had said it was interlaced (yours also does) so I never noticed it was 29.97p. Since it's just deinterlaced without changing the fps, if they used a good algorithm it will look identical to any TV's deinterlacer anyway.
Too bad for the edge enhancement but it appears to be done in a fair way from what I can see on your capture.
And to complete your post and KaizerChef's, Selecta Vision appears to reuse the french BD materials with the aforementionned additional processing (the worst being the framerate change). Both sets authored by AVMedia Barcelona.

EDIT: But a Blu-Ray can't be 29.97p, that is out of specs…??

Good news for those interested in Anime Limited's delayed release of Violet Evergarden. Turns out the new discs are authored by MediaOCD and use the home video masters:

https://twitter.com/worldofcrap/stat...02216248188930

I'm not familiar with this show, but this means it's pretty much guaranteed that these will look as good as possible. Kudos to Anime Limited for listening to the fans and hiring a competent authoring house to fix the discs.

Possible via MBAFF encoding (flagged as interlaced, but actual video is progressive).

Part 2 is simultaneously the best looking remaster of the three and the worst encoded (that one appears to have more high frequency detail/grain compared to 1 and 3 and probably why they asked about DNR). Anything that's a deep red just falls apart and there's more noticeable instances of "pulsing", in general, compared to the other two imo. The last four minutes of episode one of Part 3 (caps 13-16) use what looks some sort of dupe element (it doesn't quite look like a previous master/upscale to my eyes but I don't have a past DVD release to verify). The AnimEigo Blu is overall decent but there's definite room for improvement (one of the stretch goals should of been to add another disc).

Also, if anyone is going to watch these with the ADV dub I would not recommend the 2.0 tracks as they are absurdly loud compared to the 5.1 mixes.
