Ordered the JP version and I'm very excited to finally watch this movie.

I recall reading here that the most recent Patlabor set (the 2020 Special Edition Collection) had some subtitle improvements over the previous individual releases. I have the 2018 Ultimate collection. Does anyone know if it has improved subs as well (or if it's simply the same discs released earlier)?

Also, did the 2020 set offer any other improvements?

The 2020 release is just the 2018 discs in a slipcover as opposed to a (shiny) slipbox. The 2018 release had the subtitle improvements you're referring to. It should be noted that the credit rolls on the actual discs remain unchanged from the original releases, all the new credits are found only on the disc credits screen on the WXIII disc, so these are definitely not the original individual release discs.

I don't like it. Some scenes are blurry, artifacts show up in the grain and macroblocks are visible in some colors. This image summarises the problems well enough. It's not catastrophic but some screenshots imply it could have been much better.
Vick reviewed a different edition from 2017 which had an average bitrate of 25 Mbps. Kazé may have reauthored it for that collector's edition but I'm doubtful.

Ah yes Khazi. Getting flashbacks to their absolutely atrocious releases here in the UK. They're the only distributor of any media that I have outright blacklisted and refused to buy from for being so shit. Thankfully they no longer have a presence here.

The print quality is generally quite good during the entire presentation.

Unless there's only a few copies of a movie in existence, film restorations generally do not use release prints (unless the reviewer equates- in this case, most likely an IP because Bandai are too damn afraid to use the OCN of a title if it exists- a higher quality film element as a print).

The grain is also present in the international BD with the consistency of macroblock porridge. Darker scenes look dirty because of the poor compression.

And yet again, the film is split into multiple m2ts files for some reason when there’s no reason to be (only one cut, so no branching needed). The BFI (British Film Institute) does that too on some releases with no alternative versions for some reason. Kino Lorber does as well, but it’s just their logo as own file, then the movie as one file, then a few seconds of black screen for some reason.

Looks good, though I’ll wait for the Dynit release for consistency (to match my first 2) and because it’s cheaper. Hopefully same timing and one file like the last 2. (Though in the 2 years since the last one, I’ve learned how to re-sync PGS files if I need to)

With the BFI at least it's because they use screenpass protection. There are thousands of playlists that each contain the m2ts files in a different order.

I was too lazy to rip Devilman: The Birth (1987 OVA) which is on the same disc. The specs are similar and it occupies the other half of the BD25.
I read somewhere this was an upscale… if so it is an impressive one. There are some problems in the fast-paced action scenes (the scene with the electricity effect) but it's not noticeable unless you pause it. I wonder how it compares to the JP or Discotek disc.
By the way, Yamato has had this title in the pipeline for years but it seems they're having trouble getting the dub from Dynit.
