Mobile Suit Gundam SEED - BD / SDBD / DVD

A shame that the corrected discs have an RGB level issue, but it can be mitigated by setting RGB level to Full (won't fix all issues such as lost detail in screenshot #11). Could have been better, but I can't say that I'm unhappy with this release. Both BD and SDBD are a massive upgrade over the Beez DVD! I will still be keeping my Beez DVDs for the booklets and the Dutch subtitles.

Interesting to note that some shots of the HD widescreen Gundam SEED show a lot more info on the sides. I think there's one spot in the widescreen version where the side of a characters shoulder on the right isn't fully animated?

Shouldn't Blu-ray be viewed in YCbCr anyway? Why would you watch in the RGB colorspace? Just curious.

Yes, which is how I watch most of my discs. I don't believe there are many Blu-ray players that offer Full Range 0-255 YCbCr, so have to use RGB Full in this case.

I don't know if it's been asked before, and frankly I dont feel like going through 300 pages to check: does anybody know what is the best blu-ray version of Samurai Champloo as of today?
I know they're all upscales, since it's impossible to get native HD for this show, but even upscales tend to be of varying quality.
Thanks

Thanks for the info.

Is this to say that the non-US releases (UK, FR, DE...) of Samurai Champloo are all similar to the 2nd Funi release.

I'm region free so I would like to know if there is a release from a specific country that is regarded as the superior one?

Don't think all of them do, but the UK releases use the same discs.

Not sure. I can't find anything about it. I believe they would all be upscales though.

As far as I'm aware, the second Funimation BD is the best BD release of the show. There's one area where the JP BD is better though, and that's the ED. Funimation's encode of the ED with their English credits suffers from black crush. You can also view more comparison shots between the JP and US BD at that link.

The french release is bad. It's a DNR mess but also has other issues like the ED playing a second time without sound after each episode to show the french staff (instead of doing it once at the end of the disc like it is often done).
If you want the very best release, I'm gonna assume it's the japanese one which has english subtitles, although I'm only making an assumption here.

Oh well nevermind, I had not checked those screenshots, the Funi v2 is far superior in encoding. If you're going for tht one, note that the UK steelbook rerelease uses the same discs as the Funi v2.

Does anyone know the correct aspect ratio of Night on the Galactic Railroad and if that's what the Discotek disc uses? On IMBD it says the film is 1.66:1, watching it on Crunchyroll it seems to be slightly less than 1.77:1, and the back of the Discotek Blu-ray box reads 1.85:1. (I haven't bought the disc yet so I can't compare screenshots to see which one is cropped more). Which one of these is the original theatrical ratio, and which one allows the most of the image to be seen? What could explain these differences?

I appreciate any information.

The Discotek BD has an aspect ratio of approximately 1.75:1 (1890x1080). I'm guessing it's same as Crunchyroll?

Here's a cap of the french release on the same frame. https://imgur.com/a/loS3uYF
As you can see, it's the exact same ratio as the discotek release, the back of case the says it's a ratio of 1.77.

The encoding difference between those two shots is so small (almost non-existent, that could be caused by a different way to do that screenshot) that I wonder if the french video is a ripoff of the US release...

Thanks for the help! Those screenshots do have the same aspect ratio as Crunchyroll (which seems to be 633x360 pixels EDIT I think I may have been wrong about the Crunchyroll resolution because I was logged out when I was checking it so please ignore that), so I guess the 1.85:1 written on the back of the Discotek box is in error. It would make sense if this 1.75:1 were the original ratio, and it was slightly horizontally cropped to 1.66:1 for its theatrical release, similar to how Serial Experiments Lain is slightly wider than 4:3 on the Blu-rays. But I don't know much about film cropping, etc, so this could be totally off base.

I've started watching Sentai's Moribito BDs and I'll give my take. I don't have a BD drive so this is simply my observation and opinion.

Moribito was produced with a mixed frame rate, the large majority of it is 24fps with some scenes having 30fps portions. Sentai chose for their release to deinterlace it to 1080p/24 and drop frames. This results in choppiness during the 30fps portions. Videophiles will notice it but it's not unwatchable by any means. In contrast, Viz for their BD blended the frames resulting in ghosting during those same scenes which IMO is more distracting.

Compression is at Sentai's typical standard being solid and noticeably better than Viz's BDs. The Viz discs are not compressed well, I recall there being artifacts around the text in the OP for an example. Sentai's discs are much cleaner with the only thing I've seen really is some minor banding which looks source inherit.

The audio is also a clear upgrade as Sentai's BDs have the native 5.1 audio tracks that Viz's were missing. The show's sound design makes strong use of the surround and LFE channels.
