The US releases of Fate/Zero should re-use IMAGICA's video encode from the Japanese counterpart, so the US 2 volume release should use the same video from original 2 volume Japanese release and the US standard edition that of the JP standard edition.

So is No Game No Life Steelbook an upgrade over older releases? Seems be a common trend of these releases new releases from Sentai. Wasn't sure how it would compare to 2015.

Should be improved as new discs were likely made (Sentai very rarely re-uses discs), the copyright date and other stuff will give it away if so. Also the SteelBook includes No Game, No Life Zero, not just the TV series. The movie was a 2018 release.

![]() 2020 Complete TV Series Video quality looks pretty good to my eyes. Haven't tried the dub yet, but I took a listen to a few brief clips when taking the caps, and it sounds like it could be pretty good. Subtitles seem perfectly fine to me, though I actually went and checked the fansubbed version I had originally watched, and the two translations seemed to vary wildly. Maybe I'll do a comparison at some point. This may just be me, but the audio sounded off. The quality sounded fine, but the mixing seemed to be an issue. When adjusting the volume to a standard conversation, stuff like battle scenes would be at a decently lower volume, and inner thoughts would be at a decently higher volume. Sometimes I would be adjusting the volume multiple times during a scene. Again, this may just be me. I only have a soundbar (I know, right?) until I can upgrade to a proper surround set, but I haven't had this issue with any of my other discs. Not sure if it was a problem with every episode, either. It ports all the Japanese Blu-ray extras, including a 22-minute Making-Of, 2 1⁄2 minutes of Animatics, near 6 minutes of promos, and textless opening and ending themes. The Making-Of wasn't subtitled on the Japanese disc, but Discotek has subtitled the whole thing here. ![]() Also, may I just say I absolutely love the Discotek promo they have on the disc. The song is great, and the visuals match up beautifully. Love the retro feel. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Subtitle Examples: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Bitrates The episodes seemed to be encoded as one long video on the disc, and when I backed it up, there was four videos, with two episodes each. I didn't want to mess with it, but maybe I'll try to split them individually next time. I also like watching upscales on my projector without my glasses on (slightly nearsighted). Nice theatrical-like experience without having to worry about low resolution since I can't see it anyway.

I was thinking of asking a similar question lately, in terms of what players people use to watch their old interlaced anime DVDs. My Oppo 203 handles both live-action and progressive anime DVDs like a boss, but interlaced anime exhibits relentless combing issues on it. My PS3 handles them far better (at least as far as minimizing the combing), but it's not perfect either.
I imagine it's the unusual cadence that's probably throwing deinterlacing algorithms off, since animation is almost never animated on 1s? Does anyone watch on a player that minimizes interlacing artifacts/combing, and if so, which? EDIT: IDK if this is the right topic for this question, and I was thinking maybe a dedicated anime player topic might be worthwhile? I've asked these sorts of questions before in AVS/etc. hardware forums, but those guys mostly watch live-action and never understand my woes. Last edited by Spoofer; 08-05-2021 at 11:50 AM. |

If the Oppo BDP-203 can't do it well, then you're not going to find a player that does it much better.

apparently the UK version is a copy of the AU Hanabee version, so this applies for both, but I'll refer to it as the UK MVM version as that's the one I have and speak for both 1. the visual glitch in a couple frames in ep 24 is not present in the US Viz version 2. the sub file error in ep 13 is not present in the US Viz version 3. the audio is way higher quality and louder in the US Viz release 4. on average, episodes are 1 GB bigger in the Viz US version than UK MVM so this is nice and well, all my complaints resolved, but I was shocked to discover the DRASTIC difference in colors in some areas, the Viz US version is so much better, I can't even believe how they made it look so bad in the UK MVM version, it's day and night, examples in the IMGUR album https://imgur.com/a/Vw2LJd9 |

Most Anime that are released by VIZ or AoA in the US got shared Blu-ray discs between the UK- and AU-distributor (if released in both territories). In most cases, the AU distributor made the discs (e.g. Jojo, Monogatari, Accel World, Boruto, SAO Alicization, Promised Neverland,...). Occultic Nine and Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Saga were made by Manga UK, and Wicked City/Demon City Shinjuku possibly by a third party (Dybex?) on behalf of Manga UK.
Creating own discs from the scratch requires some thousand dollars - and many UK releases sell less than thousand copies for "regular" prices (without discounts of 50% or more). However AL tries to "clone" Discotek and Nozomi discs instead of taking the AU ones. |

Mercury Falcon made a tweet about the Seven of Seven Blu-ray, and it seems Media Blasters fumbled the ball on it. The screenshot he posted shows a really badly corrupted frame.

Media Blasters continues to prove that they should not be in the business of releasing anime on physical media (or still be in business at all for that matter).

That is unfortunate; wonder if it's because Media Blasters tried doing their own upscale. Hopefully native HD titles are less problematic.
Could be because most of their current licenses aren't very popular but their BDs are rarely discussed on these forums or reviewed by site staff so any news is appreciated. Don't know if it's still common but apparently some of their releases use the outdated MPEG-2 codec so you can't assume it's AVC when creating a new page for the database. Don't think any company uses VC-1 anymore but never say never. |

Just upscaling footage should not produce these artifacts. The error likely comes from blending 60i footage to 24p (assuming that's the actual frame rate).
Distributors needs to understand that it is daijobu to use interlaced footage on a blu-ray. Also I don't understand why any company would stick to any MPEG-2 encoders past 2015. x264 is now widely renowed with blu-ray compatibility. You can be like Madman Ent., just throw the raw japanese master at it and it should look passable. I suppose they do it because they rely on some MPEG-2 only compatible old software... It's a shame that Media Blasters releases still have these problems. They share a lot of pictures on social media on what they're working on, but I'm not sure if it's their fault of the masters supplied to them. Looks like the hentai anime releases are keeping them in business. I was really looking forward to their comeback, too. Oh well.
