Distributors needs to understand that it is daijobu to use interlaced footage on a blu-ray.

Also I don't understand why any company would stick to any MPEG-2 encoders past 2015. x264 is now widely renowed with blu-ray compatibility. You can be like Madman Ent., just throw the raw japanese master at it and it should look passable. I suppose they do it because they rely on some MPEG-2 only compatible old software...
It always boggles my mind people on internet forums know this but actual businesses who should don't.

Does Media Blasters have any releases they've done in the last few years that are actually any good? The only release I have from them on Blu-ray is season one of Ika Musume, which is a pretty good set but that was right before they downsized their operations.

Future Boy Conan: 2011 Japanese Blu-ray vs 2021 Italian Blu-ray
(Bandai Visual, Japan; Dynit, Italy)

Code:
https://slow.pics/c/t5Woz6da
Caps taken by a friend who shared this with me. The JP BD is the older restoration, while the IT BD is the new 4K restoration. Very interesting differences in framing, and more importantly, colour grading. The newer restoration has quite a bit of DNR as is the norm now, but still has good detail levels, and isn't totally scrubbed away. Both were sourced from scans of the 35mm Original Camera Negative.

Unfortunately, the Dynit BD appears to have replaced the Japanese text with Italian (I thought Dynit stopped doing that long ago...), so hopefully the GKids BD can preserve the original telop.

I was also told that the 16:9 cropped version in the IT BD box set uses the older 2011 restoration instead, so that is worth mentioning if one is considering Dynit's release.

If this is what the upcoming GKids release is going to look like, I think I'll be happy with it. Not a fan of DNR, but it seems to at least be tastefully done, and the color grading is a bit brighter and seems a but less murky than the earlier remaster.

DNR is the work of the devil. Yeah, it's not as bad as it could be, but it looks nothing like it should.

Not seeing much detail loss (if there's any) in the new version, but I still prefer the look of the older one.

Yeah, given the option I'd go for the older remaster in a heartbeat, but I don't think the new one is nearly as awful as it had the capacity to be.

That DNR job is pretty groady. Not the worst, but it's a big nope from me! They need to quit touching that stuff and leave it well alone. Yuck!

I think mp3dom said it was just dependant of the project and its popularity. Future Boy Conan being huge in Italy, they went all out on it. I don't see why people mind with those telops that matches, or closely, the Japanese one. It's not Funimation's.

Too bad the first HD master has this red tint.

Looking through those screens again, there is one other problem I see aside from the DNR that I'm not a fan of.

Looking at the wall in the background of screenshot #6 (https://slow.pics/c/OtHU6AQD), there's some evident black crush in the new remaster. The contrast seems to have been boosted in the process of regrading the image, and the result pushed the dark areas down to where some detail is lost.

The blacks are blacker on the newer remaster, but there's detail present in the blacks if you check in an image editor.

We had to put credits for some ancient italian stuff like italian song et all.
Btw, yes, it depends on each project. Most of the times we leave it as is, with the original telops, but sometimes there are other needs.

If you think the flickering is the only fault, well there's more.

TL;DR The UK Blu-ray release was a trainwreck from the start.

Thanks for that, Prof. I think it looks excellent - as you say, the detail is preserved despite some DNR and there is still some grain there, better resolved as would be expected from the 4K resolution the new restoration was performed at.

>Change framerate to PAL then encode the progressive footage as MBAFF and flag it as interlaced so that it complies with blu-ray specs

The movie has numerous on-screen text with the many timeskips. This release hardsubs those texts. Those are alright. However, they hardsubbed the subtitles for the main theme and the opening credits. The chosen font & color generates a lot of artifacts. There's some banding at places as well.
I won't go over the issues that comes from flagging the video as interlaced. You can see it in the captures I did of the credits, with the font loosing consistency.

Was there ever a release for the extended version of In This Corner of the World?

Only in Japan. There has been no indication so far that the extended version will be released elsewhere in any form. Since the title is distributed by Manga UK around the world, you would have to ask them.
