It's an export issue. Probably not dithered down correctly or exported at wrong bit depth or something. These lines also appear sometimes on Madman Blu-rays.

It’s really awful I was only able to hide it with the deband filter on the tv suprised so little people have noticed it, it’s there for almost 12 mins in ep3

Anyone picked up the Tower of God BD? Interested to see if Viz dropped the ball on this one too considering it's the first BD release of the show anywhere.

I don't think #4 is an error. Viz is actually showing us an exclusive X-ray look inside that character. Looks like it's not a person after all, and it's actually some sort of tentacle monster (probably alien) wearing a human disguise. Maybe to be revealed next season, and this is some sort of secret teaser.

US Anime Blu-ray Manufactures and Transfers


Funimation deliver Best Quality Anime Blu-ray High Bitrate (Majority) But... there English and Dub Subtitles in the Blu-rays are same as there Web and App Subtitles.

It is OVERLAPPING (Sometimes 4 Lines or More Lines on the Main Subtitle). Mixing the Background Character Speaking Translation to the Main Translation of the Character Speaking and Double Hyphens!)

Sentai Filmworks Quality Low Bitrate to Medium, sometimes you notice BANDING in Bright and Dark Scenes with Strong to Mild Gradients.

Also their Subtitle is Color YELLOW with Black Outlines which is bad. And They also do Formatting of Sign Subtitles in their respective places. But Also Overlapped Subtitles max of 4 Lines.

Viz Media Terrible Quality Lowest Bitrate and Poor Encoding. It's either WORST to somewhat Poor Quality.

And there's GKIDS High Quality Transfers Some Anime Movies in the US they license. 1 Only complain is their Subtitle Font Style TOO SMALL (size) and Thick Subtitle Font.

It is ALWAYS the Original Japanese Blu-ray has the Highest Transfer as Possible with the best Encoding.

But there are some that are still CENSORED on the Japanese Blu-rays that is still following Regulations.

Ironically enough these are somewhat tame compared to what I noticed flicking through the first episode. It definitely gets much worse than those. Also of note, the files are padded to hell again. Raw TS is almost 7gb, but the episodes themselves are actually ~18mbps.

Not true. They're often better, but not always.

Converted another few episodes to MKV and the average bitrate seems to be a fair bit lower.
One file ended up being just over 3gb @15mbps, whereas the others were sub 3gb @13/14mbps.

Needless to say, I'm not remotely interested in purchasing any Viz BDs anymore unless I can verify the quality beforehand. I've already grabbed the Japanese BDMVs for Jujutsu Kaisen as I have absolutely zero confidence in their ability to author a competent disc. I had some hope for them considering the Boruto volumes never seem to have suffered from the disastrous encoding, and are assumedly still being authored by Subatomic Digital, but after the recent string of releases Viz can sod off.

I reached out to VIZ and Crunchyroll about this issue and Crunchyroll was quick to reply:

"I see, thank you for informing us, at the moment, there are no complaints about the following item from our store:

We had such an issue in the past, and replacments were sent for the blu-ray which was affected by that type of issue".

So unlike Sentai that completely shut the door about the Made in Abyss movie audio issue, Crunchyroll seems open to the idea of doing a replacement program if more people report this issue.

Evangelion is a recent example where the US/UK version is better then the Japanese one.
