Sometimes there is something to gain with R1 releases over Bandai Visual releases. See: Patlabor TV (MJ release looks much better), Akira (FUNi has less DNR and no windowboxing as well as subtitles instead of dubtitles)

Agreed. But the Japanese sets almost always have nicer packaging
I'd like to Frankenstein my Funi Akira disc into a Bandai set with the slipcase and obi one of these days.

Just received the UK version of Blue Exorcist movie and here is what MakeMKV says about it

Sentai DVD and Blu rays are like identical in video quality, I bought that Fate spin off on both and I can't really tell the difference from blu ray and dvd. WTH?

Have a DVD v BD comparison for Ninja Scroll. Taken from the Manga UK steelbook release.

The BD, predictably, kills the DVD when it comes to compression, as well as clarity and line detail. The difference can be pretty astonishing at times (screencap 5 in particular).

There is also a brightness/contrast difference. The DVD looks darker and the BD brighter. Am honestly not sure which is the correct timing here but my eyes tell me the BD looks better as it contains slightly less black crush.

04 UK DVD | UK BD

05 UK DVD | UK BD

06 UK DVD | UK BD

And some stats, I have the data amount for the video but not the audio. The dvd is rolling with around 4GB of video data, and around 18 GB for the BD.

How is Sentai's BD by comparison? Did people complain about that one (particularly the earlier disc), or am I remembering wrong? Also really need to finally see this movie someday to see what all the fuss was about.

Don't know. I owned the original release but I sold it before I could take some screencaps when it went out of print.

My fifth screencap image perfectly matches theirs, nice coincidence. Taking a quick look between their shots and mine, it looks like the US Sentai and UK Manga release are using the same encode, while the JP image has a slightly darker contrast. And the JP disc is using a higher bitrate than the uk and us ones.

Watching the mediainfo stats, it should be a rip of the japanese disc (meaning the video is bit for bit identical).

WOW! Thanks for all the info everyone! I'm thinking the Korean release is the way to go for me as it's on par with the JP disc, has that beautiful slipcase packaging and is slightly cheaper. If anything it should be an upgrade over the Manga disc. My last major concern is the quality of the subs on the JP/KOR release. Are they faithful? I suppose anything is better than the botched subs on the UK disc...
