Just looked at these. But really? The BD crushes detail into oblivion, no? In pic 5 for example, you completely lose the floor tiles and the majority of his arm, whereas in 3 you lose all the linework of the face (and the striations in the blackness entirely disappear). Ironically considering this fact, the DVD also has deeper blacks. Do the BDs actually look like this, rather than some error in screencap grabbing or something (I'm no expert on screengrabbing so IDK).

Because otherwise, aside from the slight roughness of the Nozomi pics, you'd certainly be getting more preserved detail, no?

Yes, the BD looks like that, and I think it looks significantly better than those DVDs, which are too bright

The colorist was probably trying to go for a more realistic movie-like look in terms of lighting, which fits the show's style and atmosphere

The DVD's color is too bright and in my opinion you see more detail than you're supposed to

I also prefer BD colors even with the crushed blacks which I guess is an issue from the telecine.

people are a little too obsessive over dark details

yeah when you see something was there before and isn't now it can get you all OCD but professional colorists will sometimes opt for rolled off shadows for a different kind of aesthetic and atmosphere. preserving every bit of detail from the source isn't the ultimate priority

anyway if you're overly concerned about le preservation of details, the DVD still sucks because look at it carefully. it has a weird warping kind of thing going on that straight up squashes some details out of existence

Not every production has perfect black area detail animated or not. Brighter isn't necessarily better.

Has there been a US release yet of Violet Evergarden that uses the home video masters? Or are we still stuck with rhe broadcast versions until they do a new SKU?

There probably won't ever be a release that includes the home video masters; Funimation isn't in the habit of redoing discs for re-releases. And they're doing less re-releases now anyway. What we've got is likely it; if you want the home video masters, you'll need to import from the UK.

The US release is pretty much a copy of the Madman release that used the broadcast masters. In addition, it's also reusing the Netflix translation that wasn't very good which is an even bigger problem. So that's another reason to import the UK release instead.

I don’t understand why US releases sometimes use the broadcast masters. I can only assume it is all they are provided with by the rights holders sometimes.

It is almost always usually by accident when it happens. I've got a list.

Did funimation ever use the home video masters for the complete IBO set that has both seasons?

FUNimation very rarely makes brand new discs (it's almost exclusively Sentai that makes new ones), so probably not.

No, which is why there's a reason to worry for The Witch from Mercury if that ever gets on disc here.

I don't think there's anywhere near as much reason to worry in Witch's case. IBO was Funi distributing on Sunrise's behalf. Sunrise dubbed and prepped the materials for the show, and a large reason why we got the broadcast version was because Sunrise specifically created a translated version with English credits/in episode text for the Toonami broadcast and never updated it, whereas in this case Funimation is dubbing this in house, suggesting they have more control over the entire process.

Absolutely, Funimation has undeniably demonstrated significant improvements in the quality of their recent releases. In particular, the Arise series was nothing short of impressive, as you rightly pointed out. In fact, I would go as far as to say that the overall quality of the release is virtually indistinguishable from the original Japanese Blu-ray version.

The meticulous attention to detail and the uncompromising pursuit of excellence is evident in every aspect of the production, from the flawless translation to the vividly captivating visuals. Funimation has undoubtedly raised the bar for English dubs and has left an indelible mark on the industry.

As a passionate anime enthusiast, I couldn't be more delighted with the recent strides made by Funimation. It's a testament to their unwavering commitment to their craft, and a true reflection of the depth of talent and expertise within the organization.

Funimation's recent releases, particularly the Arise series, have set a new standard for English dubbed anime.

From the screenshots shared for comparisons the differences between IBO broadcast and home video masters are minimal (mostly backgrounds)

If anyone can confirm there were additional significant changes to the character designs then I'd be more annoyed about it so for now it's not a dealbreaker to buy it.

If it was something like Gundam Seed's original broadcast masters, then I'd have buyer's remorse

Does Vinland Saga belong on that list too? The Sentai blu-rays (and Kaze French and German blu-rays) have dimming for Japanese broadcast restrictions which indicates they don't use the home video version. Not sure if there are any other differences between the versions beyond that.
