Can't wait to see how the AtA release will compare. I mean beating VIZ's should be a given since they can just slap on the stream encode on the disc and it's miles better, but hopefully they put more effort than that and managed to improved it even further.
On a similar note, I'm surprised that there's still no comparison between VIZ's and AtA JJK release. I've been holding back on the VIZ release since I was burned by their Tower of God... |

For JJK - I expect the enthusiast buyers amongst us know their reputation and avoid their stuff like the plague now. I can 100% say that their encoding setup has not changed as Levius also has the same shit authoring. |

I hate how FuniCrunchy started using a deband filter without masking about 2 years ago. Causes smudging of detail and more banding is introduced because of how they dither/encode.

The King Of Braves GaoGaiGar - Discotek Media BD vs Flying Dog BD
Comparison (mostly episode 1, with some shots from 2 and 8) Discotek Media US BD ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Flying Dog JP BD ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() US BD seems to be a re-encode of JP BD. Next episode previews of 4 episodes, which during original broadcast were different due to promotional stuff, are in separate M2TS files just like on JP BD. Those alternate previews are by the way on US BD disc 4 as extras. Episode 2 has a blink-and-you-miss-it corruption on one frame just like on JP BD (see #31). The re-encoding introduces some generation loss, but most of the time it's imo only noticeable when you do side-to-side screenshot comparisons. I think US BD looks pretty much the same when viewed in motion, so my compliments to Justin for the encode. No complaints from me regarding the encode. The HD remaster itself also looks good overall. Crisp image with bold colors and some grain, though with some minor oddities introduced by the use of temporal dnr such as frozen grain (see #4-#5) and what I would describe as "pulsing" where the intensity of the grain can fluctuate within a scene (see #9-#10). One more thing. People with photosensitive epilepsy or other sensitivities to flashing lights should really exercise caution because of the gratuitous flash and strobe effects. This is very much of a product from the time of Computer Warrior Porygon. US BD Disc 1 BDInfo Code:

Has anyone looked at the video quality for the more recent Mill Creek bluray release of Metropolis? I assume the OOP UK Eureka release is still the best English-language release but I am curious.

Of all the English sub/dub releases, the UK/AU/DE BDs are better than Mill Creek. AU BD uses same encode as UK BD, but ditches the SDH track and has different menus. DE BD appears to be ever so slightly sharpened and extras are on DVD. |

There's not much of a difference between the US and JP BDs of Pompo the Cinephile. Unfortunately the US BD carries over the banding from JP BD https://slow.pics/c/fwaAhBsE

The funny thing is that the caps above do a disservice to how bad the Viz BD actually looks imo. It looks even worse in motion due to the amount of noise introduced due to the poor encoding. Honestly I'd take the JP BD > UK BD > CR >> Viz BD any day. Another thing not shown here is that the subtitles are also worse on Viz's BD. The UK BD is literally CR's subtitles rendered to PGS as is, retaining the same font styling and typesetting, whereas Viz goes for their usual Funimation like approach whilst using their usual font with thin borders.
