Anyone have tonemapped screencaps of the German UHD? Would really be more helpful to make a comparasion even if the tonemapping isn't the most accurate

The steelbook looks like it has washed out gamma from the links.

I don't think you can judge anything from a static shot of the menu.
Depending on how the screenshot was captured, the player could well have been outputting in the wrong range.
Regardless, from the captures there's significantly more detail in the cap for the Steelbook.

That goes for detail too then if its just a menu shot.

[Show spoiler]When using MPV, I'd at the very least add these lines to mpv.conf
Code:
#Video
--profile=gpu-hq
--deband=no

#Screenshots#
--screenshot-format=png
--screenshot-template="%f_snapshot_[%P]"
--screenshot-directory= add your preferred directory here
--screenshot-tag-colorspace=yes

#OSD#
--keep-open=yes
--script-opts=osc-timems=yes
--osd-duration=2000
--osd-font-size=30
--profile=gpu-hq enables debanding by default, but it's turned off here via --deband=no because debanding filters should not be used when taking screenshots.

MPV doesn't have inverse telecine by default. Needs to be added to input.conf:
Code:
Alt+- add video-zoom -0.001
Alt+= add video-zoom 0.001
d cycle-values vf "lavfi=[bwdif=deint=all:mode=1]" "lavfi=[idet,bwdif=deint=interlaced:mode=1]" "lavfi=[bwdif=deint=all:mode=0]" "lavfi=[idet,bwdif=deint=interlaced:mode=0]" "lavfi=[pullup,dejudder]" "lavfi=[dejudder,fps=30000/1001,fieldmatch,decimate]" ""
ctrl+d cycle-values deband yes no
Pressing d normally enabled yadif deinterlacing, but I've replaced yadif with various deinterlacing and inverse telecine filters from ffmpeg (filter documentation). First 4 are BWDIF with different settings: deinterlace all frames or only frames flagged as interlaced, double rate (mode=1) or single rate (mode=0). Last 2 filters are 2 different inverse telecine filters. Might be better to use Vapoursynth filters instead of ffmpeg, especially in regards to vfr content, but haven't looked into that yet.

I use Avisynth scripts in AvsPmod nowadays for screenshots if I'm not in a lazy mood.
I wasn't a huge fan of the UI at first, and vastly preferred MPC-BE's, but it's grown on me quite a bit. I have a customized version of MPV that was posted elsewhere, but I don't know the exact details of how it's been adjusted. I am curious on the deinterlacing stuff you did, as I'm aware that MPV's standard deinterlacer isn't the best.

Yep, that's what I was thinking.

SAO:P Film 1 Aniplex + TW BDs, Dynit BD and various rips comparison by anonymous: https://slow.pics/c/cLqGGlgp (Aniplex + TW BDs = 7, Dynit BD = 8)

The Dynit BD is quite a bit better than the kneecapped Aniplex BD that allocated too many bits to the audio tracks (some of which are useless)

Do the UK or Japanese releases of Jujutsu Kaisen 0 offer any improvements over the US offering?

The UK release is same as US. While I have not seen the US/UK release, there is most likely a significant amount of detail smudging in darker scenes because of Crunchyroll's uncareful use of a deband filter.

Italian Dynit Blu-ray, but since that's out-of-print it's a lot easier to get the French Dybex Blu-ray. Dybex release is encoded by same person as Dynit release with a slightly lower bitrate. Looks virtually identical though.

NLScavenger Thank you very much , i see that italian version has 37.30 Mbps what abysmal difference compared to others versions US - AU - CA.

Ya no doubts its the best release.

Thanks

The bitrate is the least of the reasons why it's the best release. The US BD has some awful processing done to it, and the encoding on the UK BD is pretty bad despite having a decent bitrate.

Wasn't Cowboy Bebop shot at 16mm film, and it's never going to look stellar regardless?

I really want to see a four way comparison between the JP/IT/UK/US BDs, if nothing else just to get a kick out of how bad Viz's BD is.
Do you know if there's any comparisons out there for the movie?

It definitely doesn't look like 16mm. I also want to say it's 35mm given it being a late Sunrise cell based production.

Then why is the quality no where near as good as Outlaw Star? Both shows were created in the same year.

Outlaw Star was restored later (probably from a better quality scan, too)

By the late 90s, most anime productions still on celluloid (and several transitioning to digipaint) switched to 35mm because many of the big film manufactures in Japan discontinued 16mm film stocks used for productions. Two, the price of production 35mm stocks went down and were the only ones being made until their discontinuation in the mid-2000s.
