Some more hissatsu comparisons. BTW, Le Portrait de Petite Cossette is an Aniplex title, so you will not be seeing that Blu-ray ever here. Sentai Filmworks will be losing the license either this year or next year, they first released it in 2010. We don't know the exact date it'll go as it wasn't up on Hulu for us to see an expiration date.

I took a quick look at Genshiken OVA and 2, Kujibiki TV and OVA; quality appeared similar for all.

And so, on to the Planetes JP BD box released close to a year ago. Another episode in "Stuff that will never, ever come out on BD in the US." The video quality is nice, very nice. Much better than the DVDs. I've included some comparison shots below. I'm not so hot on the new 5.1 sound mix. It's not just new mix, it's often an entirely different soundtrack. It varies from episode to episode: some are mostly unchanged, while in other episodes (5 & 6 comes to mind), most of the music is different (and not just a little different). This can be very distracting if you've seen the show before. There's a difference in the OP as well. One line is changed to one from another part of the full version of the OP. 願を 放つ時は今/Negai wo hanatsu toki wa ima in the original -> 大地をいま鳥翼けって/Daichi wo ima tori yoku kette in the 5.1 mix. Weird.

But the sound is a non-issue, since both the original (LPCM) and new 5.1 mix (TrueHD) are on the discs. Audio dramas and commentary tracks from the DVDs are present. No English of any kind, though I'm watching with subs I ripped from my US DVDs.

I found some comparisons to the DVD and it certainly is clearer, so i take it by saying it's the worst upscale you have seen meaning it's better but not by much right?

Also anyone have any clue about the others i mentioned?

Bakemonogatari episode 1 US vs AU/UK *US encode should be same as Japanese encode*

There is definitely some blocking, which is evident in the OP screenshot.
Using episode one to compare from disc one which is a BD25 containing 22.6GB of data with 5 episodes consisting of a single 21.7GB stream file. I mean considering the 5 episodes on a BD25 is a total FUNimation move it looks a hell of a lot better than anything they've coughed up.
Also I'm not sure if the US release did, I don't believe so though- this release has the Character Commentary tracks with English subtitles for said commentary (only for Bake though, not Nise)

AoA | Hanabee
AoA | Hanabee (OP)
AoA | Hanabee
AoA | Hanabee (This one seems to be slightly off, I thought I had it right but I guess not. Sorry.)
AoA | Hanabee
AoA | Hanabee
AoA | Hanabee
AoA | Hanabee
AoA | Hanabee

I'll let y'all reach your own conclusions about these. I'd like to see some of the later episodes compared at some point too for dimmer scenes such as Araragi and Senjougahara stargazing.
I also think Nisemonogatari would be a very interesting one to test as that was supposedly actually animated in full 1080p and is only on two discs here so any shortcomings may be a lot more apparent.

I'm probally gonna get a bunch of shit for saying this but I popped disc 1 of the The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya into my bluray player and it looked really good, didn't see any obvious artifacts or other problems. No-I'm not going to do screen grabs or any other such antics, I'll leave that to all the other anal video snobs out there.

To add to this - I was going to do a video comparison for Haruhi, but honestly after comparing episodes 5 and 8 (SD upscale and HD native respectively) there really is very little point. The two look pretty identical for the most part. The only thing I noted that's of any interest was a few frames in the native 1080p opening sequence of episode 5, as the Japanese BD exibits compression issues for a few frames which are not present in Funimation's release as seen here. The only real difference between the two releases is the inclusion of a signs track and 5.1 dub track on Funi's release.

I'm not going to create screenshotcomparisons for these, but I've posted my caps for the US BD and JP BD respectively on imgur.

I'm genuinely surprised FUNi of all folks managed to cram 10 episodes onto a disc and retain such a close comparison honestly. I'm all for it and I guess it's time to order! I'm doubting my copy of Disappearance will fit in the box but the spine wouldn't match anyway so whatever.

In fairness, 10 episodes in single BD50 disc is around 24Mbps. I have retail Blu-ray movies with lower bitrate than that. Normally, it's older movies and shows with lots of grain that seem to require high bitrates.

Besides, unless they just completely screw up the mastering and/or encoding, 24Mbps is a pretty decent bitrate for 1080p with H.264. I convert my Blu-rays for mobile device playback and when doing A/B comparisons, x264 -crf 18 encodes look practically indistinguishable from the originals to my naked eye. SSIM is at 0.98-0.99.

I agree that you can get perfectly fine video at lower bitrates, FUNi just hasn't been the greatest example of that in the past

I posted a few screencaps from the first episode of SNAFU 2.

Again, looks like really good work from Sentai much like the first season. I don't really have anything to say otherwise as, like Haruhi, any imperfections like light banding are down to the source.

I'll get around to getting through more of posting hissatsu's caps/comparisons soon, but here's the rest of his Ghibli ones. He's right in that there's almost no point in continuing to do comparisons (noted in his Porco Rosso comparison), the result is always the same, just beautiful.

I'll get around to getting through more of posting hissatsu's caps/comparisons soon, but here's the rest of his Ghibli ones. He's right in that there's almost no point in continuing to do comparisons (noted in his Porco Rosso comparison), the result is always the same, just beautiful.

Kiki's Delivery Service JP DVD vs. JP BD

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind JP DVD vs. JP BD

Only Yesterday JP DVD vs. JP BD

Porco Rosso JP DVD vs. JP BD

Princess Mononoke JP DVD vs. JP BD

Whisper of the Heart JP DVD vs. JP BD
Yet there are actually people who still claim that DVD looks just as good as Blu-ray.

Well, yeah- the original release also has a PS3 game on the disc so there's significantly less space.

It depends on the situation, but pretty much. As far as Ghibli remasters go, the Blu-ray completely obliterates the DVD every time, and they're so...beautiful. If someone can't tell the difference on these, they really need to get their eyes checked.

Some more hissatsu comparisons.

I no longer have the R2 Box to compare to, so the MB R1 release will have to suffice. Though I remember thinking years ago that it wasn't bad. I know bit rate is actually high pretty high (reaching near max for DVD often). Still looks like garbage compared to the BD though. Way too much ringing and the color timing and contrast on the BD is far better.

It appears grain removal was done, though light grain remains, and 90's 35mm film stocks were generally pretty fine-grained to begin with. I can't see any evidence of detail loss, and being a 4K telecine, I'd expect more detail, and it's certainly there.

The BD image is slightly wider 4:3; active image area is 1478x1080 (and screenshots are cropped to that width), so BD screenshots show slightly more image on the left and right edges than the DVD. DVD screenshots bicubic resized to 1440x1080

Mononoke US Geneon Bakeneko DVD vs. JP BD
[Show spoiler](At the time he made this post (April 6, 2011), Mononoke was still unlicensed in North America. He used the portion of Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales that Geneon Entertainment had released that the Mononoke anime was spun-off from to compare to the JP BD of the Mononoke series proper. Also, after actually embedding this, seems some shots I had the wrong link. To save time with these through the Internet Archive, I've just copy and pasted the first URL and then changed the numbers. Seems a few had slight URL differences (typos?), so that's going to be fun to fix, joy. Have to figure out what shots aren't working.)

Luckily, it isn't. I took comparison shots of the portion that was released in the US, Bakeneko from Ayakashi. The video quality from Mononoke proper is the same, except in 16:9.

Mononoke/Bakeneko is a visually unique show, and probably somewhat problematic because of that. Everything is made to look as if it was done on washi paper, and there are no truly still shots because the texture is constantly moving/writhing a bit. There are no clean lines; every line looks like scratchy ink lines on rough paper. The lack of sharp of sharp details means that the BD and DVD look rather similar when there isn't much motion. In fact the texture probably helps the DVD a bit when there's not much motion - plain old quantization noise just blends right into the much more noticeable texture. But when there's a lot of motion, I don't think it's possible for mpeg2 at DVD bitrates to keep up; it just breaks down entirely. This is noticeable on shot 9, and impossible to miss on the last one. No need to pause to see that. Basically, if the medicine seller is golden and doing stuff, the DVD looks terrible for those portions.

P.S. The packaging is very nice. The shot on Amazon in the post before mine show it pretty well, though they added some nice iridescent foil highlights and the titles to the box.

As Mania is long gone, that post he's referring to is gone. However, I've gone and searched for the image, voila.

Revolutionary Girl Utena US Nozomi Entertainment DVD vs. JP BD

A little disappointing, but pretty much what was expected.

Revolutionary Girl Utena: The Adolescence of Utena US DVDs vs. JP BD

Looks rather nice, though the digital animation and CG portions obviously aren't as sharp as the 35mm film, and there is some edge enhancement. I've included the CPM DVD in the comparison, as it and the Nozomi remaster release were kind of a tossup. More compression artifacts, EE, and jacked up contrast on the CPM DVD, lots of aliasing and what looks like pretty heavy noise reduction on the Nozomi DVD.

What I have left that I'm planning to post:
-Denpa Teki na Kanojo JP BD
-Ga-Rei-Zero JP DVD vs. JP BD (series was initially DVD-only in Japan) + More JP BD screens*
-Macross Frontier: The False Songstress JP BD
-Mazinkaizer SKL JP BD
-Moyashimon JP BD
-Ninja Scroll JP DVD vs. JP BD
-Occult Academy JP BD
-Patlabor US CPM DVDs vs. JP BDs
-Re: Cutie Honey JP DVD Rip vs. JP BD
-Record of Lodoss War OVA Series JP DVD vs. JP BD (This has a very huge improvement as it never got a particularly good release before the Blu-rays)
-The Garden of Sinners JP DVDs vs. JP BD
-The Place Promised in Our Early Days US DVD vs. JP BD

*He was trying to compare to shots someone posted of FUNi's release. Sadly I won't be able to find that post, but it doesn't matter as they uploaded all their screens via ImageShack so those US shots are toast. Basically FUNi's release had the usual brightness problem and something else. When I post it, if anyone wants to try comparing to that second batch of JP shots, feel free to do so.

Really wish hissatsu did this stuff more often, he did so much of this years ago as you can tell and was a great help to videophiles. Also, sadly there are a few lost comparisons (WTK didn't quote them/Fandom Post didn't exist yet, and the Internet Archive didn't save them), such as 5cm Per Second, Rurouni Kenshin: Reflection, and Toradora!, so there are a few that will remain lost.

I can hear the executives already:

"Well, you said you wouldn't buy a series if we put the whole thing on one BD."
