Interestingly the clean opening & ending extras are 480i VC-1

Could be that there is no HD clean versions (Japan doesn't have its own BD IIRC) so the only clean OP & ED is the Japanese DVD copy and Sentai didn't want to upscale them
IIRC, the show itself was upscaled on the old discs while the extras were in SD.

Speaking of which, I see his review doesn't mention the behind the scenes extra that's advertised on the back cover and also on the old releases, could you confirm if it's included or not?

Behind the scenes extra isn't on my disc.

Just clean opening, clean ending and disc credits

Oh lovely.....guess I have a reason to keep my 1080i disc while switching cases whenever I get this new set.

You had one job Sentai...

Curious why that would go missing.

So the option just isn't there on the menu at all? Looks like a S'More Entertainment Bobobo subtitles situation.

The hell?

Reminds me of Viz's release of Mazinger Z Infinity that originally advertised dub outtakes that ended up not included.

EDIT:

The missing extra in question.

Booklet credits remastering and authoring/encode to Q-Tec.

This BD looks great; all previous releases are absolutely destroyed by it. For a movie which had multiple cuts edited digitally and was edited in a digital workflow, this remastering does wonders. I almost wonder if they had found the OCNs for the non-digital cuts, as a lot of this is too sharp to be from a 2000 DI (to me)

The audio seems identical to previous releases to me; I don't have a 5.1 setup so can't confirm directly any issues or changes

Subs are just Japanese subs and a signs track

The JP dub has been conformed to the English theatrical cut, so both audio tracks use the instrumental ending theme by Marco D'Ambrosio (Japanese version ending credits with the new song by Do As Infinity are included as an extra)

As a BD set it's a great presentation, with a beautiful box/booklet, a 35mm film splice, and a reprint of the OST CD included as well

The only downside to me is no English captioning track, but only a foreigner would care much about that

If you really like this movie and can afford it, I'd suggest buying this; by far the best this movie has looked and may ever look

Why the hell TOEI did not use the same disc, I will never know. I did not open the Jp disc as I have the US one. I would like the Jp OEDO, but will not bother if it is a step down from the Discotek disc.
I have it. It's BD25 indeed, and not even fully utilised... The extra's are just some galleries. I purchased it because I wasn't fully satisfied with the Discotek disc, but they made it even worse. D:

I think its quality is decent. Bit of a wasted potential though, considering it's BD50, but only about 33GB.

Here's a comparison: https://slow.pics/c/E1CbkfqH

Both versions look almost essentially identical considering the marginal bitrate difference (22831kbps vs 19001kbps). The Discotek might have a slight edge in resolving the grain, but either version is going to look fine considering the mediocre bitrates. Considering the JP Bluray is around 68USD right now before shipping, I wouldn't go out of your way to buy it unless you're just a completionist collector. Especially when you can get the Discotek for around half that from, say, the Crunchyroll store.

Both are of course definitely better than that shitshow upscale that was released originally by Discotek and the compression is of course way better than even the original JP DVD which was pretty decent release for its time especially in comparison to the US DVD.

Identical bitrate by no means translate to identical look. There's significant blocking in the dark areas of the JP BD. Worse, there is apparent low-pass filtering, especially in the second comparison. Unless someone beats me to it, I will add the French version to have a third contender.

I stated they look "essentially identical" which is true if you're watching them in motion. Of course, as I stated, Discotek did have an edge in things like resolving the grain but that's only mostly notable when just looking at screenshots. Honestly, the 3mbps average difference makes marginal difference in the PQ the vast majority of the time since they are both pretty mediocre encodes.

This is why there's no real reason to buy the JP Blu-ray unless you're just a completionist.

This dub was originally made for DVD right? I assume the extra was a straight port from that disc and in SD?

It's upscaled to HD, but it's a janky interlaced upscale to 1080i as there is combing in the credits. Seems weird they didn't just recreate the credit scroll in actual HD. And the audio is also only stereo LPCM for some reason. Although I've never specifically looked at the separate channel waveforms for the 5.1 track on the JP DVD, so I guess it could have always been essentially stereo.

I assume it wouldn't be too hard to take the audio from that video (while padding it out to 5.1 with silent channels) and then just splice it into the 5.1 Japanese track in place of the original English ending song. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of reasons to keep the interlaced Japanese credits as they look like crap.

Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam - 2020 Bandai JPN BD, 2016 Nozomi USA BD, 2019 Anime Ltd. GBR/FRA BD, 2005 Bandai USA DVD comparison

Zeta Gundam really needs a new remaster.

Anime Ltd. BD is authored by Com'on Screen. They did their own encodes of Nozomi's assets with a chromaloc shift. PGS subtitles are the same as Nozomi's.

The Japanese release uses the 2005 DVD translation (so do the Nozomi and Anime Ltd. BDs). The 2004 Limited Edition DVD with the pencil sharpeners has dubtitles.

imagine Zeta Gundam with a remaster that isn't rushed, & looks crisp like Vifam's or L-Gaim's, probably not gonna happen anytime soon though

I'm wondering if the UK BD of Gargantia is better than the Viz release. The listings on this site suggest that they're different discs (supposedly the audio on the Viz discs is 16 bit DTS, while the Manga UK discs are supposedly 24 bit PCM). This review claims that the UK discs were authored locally and has unlocked subtitles (did the Viz release have locked subtitles?).

Can someone with the UK release confirm these details? Also comment on the picture quality and subtitle legibility (the Viz white subs can be hard to read and tend to blend in). If these discs were done by Manga UK, and aren't just a copy of the Viz release, I'm thinking there's a pretty good chance that the video quality is significantly improved. But I'm not sure what Manga UK's reputation was for their discs back then, so if someone could comment on that, it might also be helpful.
